    Week 5 NFL Preview
    10/02/2007

    NFL-REG-5 10/2/07

    FOUR 5-0 TEAMS WOULD BE ONLY SECOND TIME IN HISTORY;

    TURNAROUND TEAMS TURNING IT ON!

Four weeks in, the wild and crazy NFL is running true to form.

“In the NFL, things can get crazy,” says quarterback JON KITNA of the Detroit Lions, who ought to know. He engineered a 34-point outburst last week in the fourth quarter, the most points ever scored in the fourth quarter of an NFL game (most points ever in any quarter: 41 -- Green Bay vs. Detroit, 10/7/45, second quarter; and Los Angeles vs. Detroit, 10/29/50, third quarter).

Points have been aplenty through the first four weeks of the season. A total of 2,622 have been scored, the second most in that time span since 1970 (2,719 in 2002).

Four teams this week can advance to 5-0. That many 5-0 teams has happened only once before (2003).

And four other teams are well on their way down the “turnaround” road. In 2006, Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland and Tampa Bay had a 13-51 (.203) combined season record. This year through the first quarter of their season, they are 10-6 for a .625 mark.

“If we play like this the rest of the year, who knows what can happen?” exults Browns wide receiver BRAYLON EDWARDS. A lot of teams feel that way.

Indeed, in the NFL, you never know what will happen! Some of the games in Week 5 that can prove that premise:

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (3-1) at PITTSBURGH STEELERS (3-1)

STORYLINE: Super Bowl rematch -- with some sacks thrown in?

It’ll bring back memories of a cold day in Detroit. It’s the first meeting of the teams since Super Bowl XL, when the Steelers’ BEN ROETHLISBERGER became the youngest quarterback in history (23) to win a Super Bowl.

Now it should be a warm day in Pittsburgh as Roethlisberger and the Steelers are coming off their first loss of the year in which they surrendered four sacks to Arizona -- their total through the first three weeks of the season. And, wouldn’t you know it? -- here come the Seahawks, anxious to extract some revenge for Supe XL and fresh off a six-sack effort against San Francisco, with three coming from LB JULIAN PETERSON.

Even with that output, “It’s going to be tough going into Pittsburgh,” says Seahawks head coach MIKE HOLMGREN.

Rush game: RBs WILLIE PARKER (93) of Pittsburgh and SHAUN ALEXANDER (91) of Seattle lead the league in carries…the Steelers have not surrendered a 100-yard rushing performance since 11/28/05 (EDGERRIN JAMES, 124 yards) -- a league-leading streak of 25 such games.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (3-1) at INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (4-0)

    STORYLINE: Hello, Cato!

Of course, CATO JUNE will be far from the only interesting scenario in this matchup (Colts head coach TONY DUNGY used to coach Tampa Bay), but the linebacker who led the Super Bowl XLI-champion Colts in tackles in both the regular

    NFL FACTOID

PATS & THE ALL-AMERICANS!: You’ve got to go all the way back to the first year of the NFL – 1920 – to match what the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS have done this season. The Patriots have defeated all four of their opponents by 20 or more points. The last team to do that to start a season? The BUFFALO ALL-AMERICANS in 1920.
    ******************************************************************************************************************************************

season (162) and postseason (26) will get a lot of attention when he returns to the RCA Dome as a member of the Bucs.

He has helped the Bucs become the stingiest defense in the league among clubs that have played four games. Tampa

Bay has allowed only 44 points (11.0 points per game). Problem is, they go against the third highest-scoring offense in the league – Indy and its 131 points (32.8).

And talk about efficient. Between them, the starting quarterbacks – Indy’s PEYTON MANNING (16-5 vs. the NFC since 2002) and Tampa Bay’s JEFF GARCIA -- have thrown one interception (Manning).

The Bucs’ defense will have to be ready for TE DALLAS CLARK (6 catches, 72 yards, 2 TDs last Sunday) to be an outside force if MARVIN HARRISON (knee) can’t make it.

CLEVELAND BROWNS (2-2) at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (4-0)

    STORYLINE: Hello, Romeo! Hello, Willie!

Yet another reunion game. But to Browns head coach ROMEO CRENNEL, it’s a pure business trip, memories or no. “We could be going to Timbuktu and it would be the same thing,” he says. It’s the first time that Crennel and Browns LB WILLIE MC GINEST have faced their old team since helping them to three Super Bowl titles in four years from 2001-04, with Crennel as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Now the defensive coach has an offensive “juggernaut.” The Browns, led by QB DEREK ANDERSON, have scored at least 24 points in each of their last three games. In 2006, they scored 24 only three times. The addition of RB JAMAL LEWIS (seventh in the league with 371 rush yards) and the emergence of receivers BRAYLON EDWARDS and KELLEN WINSLOW – sixth (375) and seventh (367), respectively, in reception yards in the NFL – has provided that firepower.

Of course, no one understands the hurdle the Patriots present better than Crennel. They are averaging 37 points a game, QB TOM BRADY has thrown at least three TDs in all four games (only STEVE YOUNG in 1998 and KURT WARNER in 1999 have started a season that way), and new WR RANDY MOSS leads the league with seven TD catches.

CHICAGO BEARS (1-3) at GREEN BAY PACKERS (4-0) (Sunday night, NBC, 8:15 PM ET)

STORYLINE: Time to turn it around.

Each club thinks that -- but for different reasons. The Bears, NFC champions, are in the same fix they were in three years ago: 1-3. They went on to win their next eight and the NFC North title. Time to do it again, they say. “It’s about how we’re going to respond,” says new Chicago starting QB BRIAN GRIESE. “We’ve got a big test coming up this week. I wouldn’t want to have it any other way for us to get things back on track.”

The Packers – who have dropped three of the past four to Chicago but have the NFL’s longest winning streak, eight straight going back to last year – don’t have such dire problems, but want to fix a concern before it becomes serious. That’s their running game. As great as their passing offense is (ranked No. 2 thanks in large part to No. 4, BRETT FAVRE), their rushing attack is last in the league, averaging 54.3 yards per game. “We’re in a throw mode right now,” says Favre.

Packers offensive coordinator JOE PHILBIN thinks there’s much fixing to be done. “We’ve got so many things to get better at and the season’s so young,” he says. “No one should be looking at what our record is right now.”

A special teams special: The league’s punt-return leader, Chicago’s DEVIN HESTER (19.9), will go against the team that allows the second-lowest average return (1.8).

DALLAS COWBOYS (4-0) at BUFFALO BILLS (1-3) (Monday night, ESPN, 8:30 PM ET)

    STORYLINE: This year’s Romo?

It’s too early to jump to conclusions off one start, but the Bills have to be happy with the performance last week of Stanford rookie QB TRENT EDWARDS, a BILL WALSH protégé. The third-round draft choice led Buffalo to season highs in points (17), total yards (304), passing yards (218), first downs (19), and threw its first TD pass.

Hey, who knew TONY ROMO at this time last year?

Of course, the Dallas quarterback is known – well-known – this year. He has taken the ’Boys to their best start since 1995 and the league scoring lead (151 points/37.8 points per game). Dallas has outscored its opponents by an average of almost three touchdowns a game (19.8).

“Four-and-oh is nice,” says new Cowboys head coach WADE PHILLIPS, who was Buffalo’s coach from 1998-2000. “But it doesn’t put us in the Super Bowl, it doesn’t put us in the playoffs. But it’s good that we’re there.”
