I BEG to differ! I, myself, am a Western Kentucky Hilltopper, I'm quite offended at this Pittsburgh Propaganda.

The roots of the "Terrible Towel" go back to 1975, however Hilltopper fans have been waving their red towels for well over 50 years.

Legendary Western Kentucky Basketball Coach E.A. Diddle, who still ranks in the top 10 winningest coaches in NCAA history with 759 victories, should be the one credited with the invention of the rally towel, not Myron Cope.

Infact, the statue of Ed Diddle in front of Diddle Arena features him holding a towel. When you take the time to make a statue for a guy, infront of an arena named after the guy, holding a towel. You get to see how important this towel actually is. Does Myron Cope have a statue holding a terrible towel? I don't think so!

A great write up in regards to the Red Towel can be found at:

and an excellent excerpt from the above link:

If you need more proof, in 1971 (The same year Western Kentucky made it the NCAA Final Four and was defeated in 2 overtimes by Villanova) WKU's official logo received a facelift. Infact, the WKU logo was a RED RALLY TOWEL.

Much like the one pictured above.

So Mr. Pittsburgh Steelers Fan... How original was that towel idea?

Don't let this deflate your balloon too much, Mr. Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Your organization isn't the only one who has copied Western Kentucky's insignia.

Western's Mascot, "Big Red" who has been featured on numerous ESPN commercials and is consistently a finalist for Capitol One's Mascot Challenge every year, was recently ripped off by a television show in Italy.

Big Red, on the left, and Gabibbo (The Italian Knock-off) on the right.

I can see it now. Pittsburgh will be bringing out a new Mascot next year. They shall call him...

Pittsburgh's terrible towel was the first rally towel to clean Jevon Kearse's cleats. ;-)

I think Jerry Tarkanian also boasted a towel back in the 70's with Long Beach State. Steelers just managed to make it famous.
