    Like the term "progressive rock", folks have applied to to all sorts of bands.
    Americana may have meant something different in 1974 but the Americana of today is essentially alt-country inclusive w various blues, bluegrass, country/rock etc acts. Grateful Dead is probably a cousin of this..
    Ironically the national headquarters for Americana Music is here in Franklin, TN. Just a coupla miles away..
