I would've bumped last year's thread, but it was closed. So here is the 2010 edition.

Here's a look at the previous 3rd round selections for recent history:

    Jared Cook
    Ryan Mouton
    Craig Stevens
    Paul Williams
    Courtney Roby
    Brandon Jones
    Randy Starks
    Rich Gardner
    Chris Brown
    Rocky Calmus
    Shad Meier
    Erron Kinney
    Byron Frisch
Zack Piller (Tennessee Oilers draft pick)
Dainon Sydney (Tennessee Oilers draft pick)

"We've pretty much sucked drafting in the third round." 2009

    We've SUCKED in the 3rd round."2010"

RollTide will continue to argue about how Craig Stevens is the next Jason Witten, but with this year's crop of TE's, I don't see how 2 seasons on the bench from a 3rd round pick has helped us much. And YEAH I know he has special teams tackles, if that's all you want out of 3rd rounder, then YAY.

I said Ryan Mouton would suck in the NFL after we drafted him and I still think so.

I hope Jared Cook becomes the real deal, especially since he really cost a 2nd rounder.

Regardless we aren't getting any serious contribution out of our 3rd round selections, and that needs to be fixed.

The 3rd round is what makes or breaks most teams drafts. You can still find great talent at low low prices. Our 3rd round history may not be too impressive, but if RollTide feels Craig Stevens is the next Jason Witten for whatever reason then I'll wait for it. I say some things also that others don't buy at first, but if I know it before you its okay. RollTide might see something the rest of us are overlooking.

Jared Cook - sky's the limit I hear
    Ryan Mouton - undecided
    Craig Stevens - undecided
Paul Williams - oh boy, why?
    Courtney Roby - wasted pick
Brandon Jones - still think he can be good
    Randy Starks - good pick
Rich Gardner - he was a Titan???
    Chris Brown - good pick
    Rocky Calmus - not terrible
Shad Meier - wow, I haven't seen this name is years (garbage)
Erron Kinney - a Titan too too long
Byron Frisch - not so good a pick
    Zack Piller - good pick
    Dainon Sydney - good pick

Why exactly do you rate Randy Starks and Dainon Sydney as "good" picks?

I think it's awful that nobody before Craig Stevens is on our roster.

I don't think it's wise to move out of this round considering the talent that can be found.
Jets got Shonn Greene last draft.
Texans got Steve Slaton two drafts ago. And year before that grabbed Jacoby Jones, and in 06 got Eric Winston. They know how to do it in the 3rd round I guess.
Saints landed Usama Young in 2007.
Bills drafted Trent Edwards in 07 also.

The thing with players picked in round three is that they need time to blossom into the potential players the scouts see. Two - three years down the round is when these guys come around. And not to mention the 4th-7th rounders that surprise people, those same guys could just as easily have gone in round three. But clearly these aren't the household names we love to cheer for. Most stars didn't come into the league as stars. They all need some type of time to adjust to the league.

Justin Tuck and Frank Gore were both also 3rd rounders, now some years later look how good they've become.

Your history of 3rd round picks don't really suggest we trade out. They aren't bad at all.

hell, we don't draft great. Doesn't mean we should trade out of all picks.

Ok I've had a few beers but how did Deuce just make a "great point" there?

I'm not so much serious about the "trade out the 3rd round" thing as I am pointing out how much we have sucked at drafting in that round. Note how many players are still on this team drafted in the 3rd.

We need major improvement in that round.

Or trade up, or for a player. ;)

actually i kinda agree, looking at those names we have not had much success. in the 3rd round there is a lot of talent to be gotten. just look at the draft history on nfl.com and check out the third round for the last ten years or so and see the many stars we coulda had.

if i were writing this list:
Jared Cook - im still waiting....
    Ryan Mouton - undecided
Craig Stevens - undecided - this year will tell us a lot from the way its shaping up w/ the TE situation
    Paul Williams - waste
    Courtney Roby - waste
    Brandon Jones - waste
Randy Starks - waste - he was playing really good for the 'fins this season. an ideal end in the 3-4 system. he was a good pick but not for us and he left as a FA and got nothing out of him = waste
Rich Gardner - who = waste
    Chris Brown - fumble guy??
Rocky Calmus - showed promise, started for a bit, but never really did much. i thought he was better then ppl gave him credit for.
    Shad Meier - waste
Erron Kinney - he did alright, had a decent role. more a blocker
    Byron Frisch - waste
Zack Piller - great pick = he actually held a starting position for years and was good
Dainon Sydney - not to good

so really, bottom line, IN ALL THESE PICKS WE HAD 1 PLAYER, (a guard, probably the safest/easiest position - and hey we have a legend coaching them) WHO EVER BECAME A YEARLY STARTER..... that my friends is horrible

IMO, Brandon Jones and Courtney Roby are only wasted because our FO let them go. Brandon Jones was/is very talented, and Roby could have been a difference maker for us on ST's this past season. He's got the ring now, and we call him a waste?

I really like Craig Stevens. I don't care what anyone else says. I believe he would have been involved more this season had Crumpler not improved on his blocking. I think he could be our next Kinney, and Kinney was a good pick.
