One of the knocks on quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is that he doesn’t throw a great deep ball, and he hasn’t necessarily done much to dispel that in his appearances with the Titans.

Fitzpatrick did connect with Nate Washington on a 77-yard touchdown pass against the New York Jets, but he’s had limited success otherwise.

According to the Pro Football Focus website, Fitzpatrick has been accurate on just three of 10 pass attempts targeted 20 or more yards downfield, a 30 percent accuracy rate that ranks him 27th out of 34 quarterbacks who’ve taken at least a quarter of their team’s snaps.

In addition, Fitzpatrick has thrown three interceptions on those 10 deep attempts, including one back-breaker last week when Richard Sherman picked off a pass intended for Nate Washington.

“It definitely helps when you can throw the ball down the field because when people know you want to run the football, they’re going to overpopulate the line of scrimmage,” said offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, noting that Fitzpatrick did connect with Kendall Wright on a 32-yard completion down the left sideline against Seattle.

“If you can’t throw it over their heads, you’re going to see eight-man and nine-man run fits the whole game.”

Are teams respecting Fitzpatrick’s ability to throw long at present?

“I think teams we’ve played feel comfortable putting cornerbacks one-on-one on the island,” Loggains said. “Structurally, we get a little different stuff than most people get because of our run game. We’ve played three really good defenses (over the past three weeks) that play press, line up and take you one-on-one and try to put eight guys in the run fit.”

Hard to throw deep when your qb can barely throw the ball 20 yards with little accuracy
