Yeah I remember Cruz, he was number 3 on the Giants or right? He looked like a beast. Ended up with with 3 games and no catches. Biren Ealy did look like a boss that preseason and was on the practice squad all year afterward. You could blame Fisher for his preference toward veterans, as I like to do sometimes, but if Ealy was legit he would've seen the field, or at least the team.

Having the most yards of any receiver in the preseason is a useless stat. Mariani is one of my favorite players on this team because he is a good returner, but I'm not about to start saying that he's earned anything as a WR. If he earns the slot spot on the team, so be it. It's good that he is "eyeing a larger role" because every player should be hungry to achieve, but just because he had a good season returning kicks and Bill Bellichick ran a few reverses with him in the Pro Bowl doesn't mean he's established his place as a receiver on this team.

Honestly, all I really take out of this is that Mariani wants to eventually be a starting WR (As every NFL WR should) and is going to work his butt off. Sounds good to me and I wish him the best. I love rooting for the underdogs and the 7th round picks. That being said, even though I hope he earns it, I also hope that Williams and Hawkins earn their place. I think Williams has the best chance, and hell, maybe if he feels like Mariani is nipping at his heels his game will step up.

 

What I meant from the preseason comment is that he has been showing his skills as a WR from day one. I am pretty sure he would be one of our most consistent WR's on our team. From the start he has been showing he has good hands.

 

Justin Gage has shown good hangs too... but there's more to being a WR than catching.

I think people just get carried away because of Wes Welker. Ok, they're white... that's it.
