One reason it's good to have a MLB calling the shots is because they're in the middle of the field and can see pretty much everything. They can bark orders/calls to the DL, other LBs and the CBs easier than other positions. Plus peing in a 2pt stand allows them a taller view to see over the trenches. SS/FS is back a fair bit further and may not notice things a LB can.

Plus, they can be involved just as much in the run as the pass. It's an important to have a solid MLB, the Ravens nor the Bears D's are nowhere near as good without a Lewis/Urlacher type. Hell even the Packers D without Mathews wasn't near as good.

 

He knows this stuff, has to, its common knowledge. but as soon as dbc notices a player losing it with the "fans", dbc comes to his rescue.

And I wouldn't say that's common knowledge. I only know that mainly from playing LB for 7 years through elementary/high school. I was middle and captain until my later years, then there were bigger guys on the team so they moved my out to the outside because of my speed. Damn I miss playing :(

 

My thoughts exactly. Sad because dude showed a lot of promise early on.

 

Ideally you want your MLB to run/captain the D and your QB to run the O. Unfortunately not all players have the personality or capacity to be leaders despite their on the field play. I've been on teams where the QB was forced into a captain role when he had little leadership qualities aside from his play. It wasn't pretty.

I'd say I'll miss him, but much like mariani he hadn't been on the field. Only thing to miss is a distant memory. What a shame.

 

The frequency of his injuries remind me of Shawn Merriman and Brian Cushing. Makes me wonder if he was a past steroid user as well.
