SUMMARY: Earlier this season, talk of the playoffs for the Titans would have been laughed at. But with two weeks remaining in the NFL regular season, the Titans still cling onto a slim chance of a wildcard spot. The Titans are one of eight teams vying for the AFC's two wild-card spots. Tennessee is currently behind five of the eight, including Buffalo who they play Sunday. "(The playoffs) are in the back of your minds because you don't want to just go out and end the season hot and have to cool off during the offseason," S Chris Hope said. "But we are just taking it one game at a time. That's all you can do."

    We can do it!!

There are the 8-6 teams;; broncos-bengals-fags-jets.. then the 7-7 teams..steelers-KC-bills-TITANS. those teams are vying for 2 wild card spots.

Because of conference records we need either the bengals or broncos to lose out. If both those teams win just one game we are out. Obviously if 2 of the 8-6 teams win out we are done. We can't finish 10-6.

That would leave a possible tie breaker situation possible between Titans-jags-jets and maybe steelers for the final spot if we win out and they finish 1-1. The 5th spot going to either the broncos or bengals. In a three or four way tie breaker head to head doesn't matter. The fact we lost to the jets doesn't come into play. All three teams would be 6-6 in the conference so the next tie breaker is quality of victories followed by scedule. The titans would win that!

So our super run scenario looks like this:

Titans win out and go 9-7.
Jags-jets-fags each lose at least one more.
Either the broncos or bengals lose out.

If this happens we are in at #6 and probably traveling to baltimore for the wild card game. Indy and san diego would get the top seeds. :grrhee: How about that scenario guys?

here's a pretty nice breakdown from scine09 over at titanscentral.....

    1. Tennessee at Buffalo (obviously the titans need to win)
    2. Baltimore at Pittsburgh (Steelers need to win to keep up the possibility of the 3-way tie between NYJ, Pit, and Ten that the Titans could win based on strength of victory)
    3. NY Jets at Miami (Dolphins need to win because the Jets close at home with Oakland. The goal is for the Jets to finish at 9-7, tied with the Steelers and Titans)
    4. Kansas City at Oakland (Chiefs need to win to keep the possibility open that the Chiefs could knock out the Broncos with identicle 9-7 records based on the divisional tie breaker. The Titans would win a tie breaker vs KC and would not have to worry about the Broncos in that situation)
    5. New England at Jacksonville (the Titans need to gain a game against the Jags. Better do it now than wait till next week at KC)
    6. Cincinnati at Denver (I'd root for Denver here. If Denver wins then it takes away the pressure for the Chiefs to have to win out, although they may have to beat Jax. Cin will have to lose to Pit in week 17, so the best bet is for Denver to be the other playoff team with the Titans)
    7. New Orleans at NY Giants (root for the giants. a win gives the titans a better strength if victory while hurting pit's strength of victory. A saints victory does the opposite)

    8. Tie:
Washington at St. Louis (root for Washington)
Tampa Bay at Cleveland (root for Tampa Bay)
Indianapolis at Houston (root for Houston)
Carolina at Atlanta (root for Atlanta)
Philadelphia at Dallas (root for Philadelphia)

All of those results will either help the Titans strength of victory or hurt the Steelers strength of victory.

if the Titans, Steelers, and Jets were to finish at 9-7 here is how the strength of victory looks right now based on the teams current records and the teams that the titans and steelers need to beat

    Tennessee: 64 wins
    Pittsburgh: 58 wins
    NY Jets: 50 wins

The Jets cannot catch the Titans in strength of victory.

If the Titans and Steelers tie, the Steelers would then win the tie breaker based on a better record vs common opponents

So obviously every game listed means something.

and if the titans lose to buffalo they are eliminated mathematically

    Strength of victory..

Looks like nobody can really touch us there. How do the collective opponents of any team pick up over 7 wins more than we will have especially after we win the last 2?

Problem pittsburgh has is that they will likely finish behind the bengals for third place if the bengals win against the broncos. In a tiebreaker involving 3 or more teams the third place teams are eliminated. Pittburgh can't finish with a better division record than the bengals so they have to hope the bengals lose to the broncos..

Pittsburgh, denver, jags might not even be considered in a multiple team tiebreaker because they would be third place teams. That actually could hurt us..

    What if..

    Denver
    Bengals
    Steelers
    Jags
    jets
    KC
    Titans

    all finished 9-7? Possible.

Division tiebreakers would eliminate the third place teams. That would be the steelers, broncos, fags.

    Leaving the Titans-chiefs-jets-bengals.

Bengals have the best conference record so they would be the 5th seed. Because the jets and titans would be tied for next best conference record it would go to the next available tiebreaker strength of victory. Titans win that over both the chiefs and jets.

Seeds like it is best for us to be tied with the most possible teams.

I thought one of the key components, besides the Titans winning, was for the Bengals to lose out.

    Man I'm confused.

Most important thing is beat the Bills in that toilet of a city.

  7. I think the titans gotta concentrate on winning out and seeing what happens, we're in a good position it looks like from what RollTide has written, so we'll see...

Of course, Vince Young in the playoffs must really scare the other teams competing...

don't the broncos face the bengals this next week?? that would kind of make it impossible for either of them to lose out the rest of the season.
