The heroic feats of linebacker Jonathan Willard on his way to Titans training camp didn’t help him earn a spot on the final roster.

The Titans cut Willard, an undrafted free agent from Clemson, on Saturday as they whittled the roster down to 53 players.

Willard earned national attention in late July, when he helped save a woman, her three small children and a dog from a burning car alongside I-40.

The 23-year-old Willard was driving from South Carolina to Nashville when he spotted smoke coming from a car. He alerted the driver of the car to pull over, then – with the help of another good Samaritan – helped the family from the vehicle. Only a few minutes later, the car exploded in flames.

Willard made seven tackles for the Titans during the preseason and is eligible to be signed Sunday to the team’s practice squad.
