Today i'm listening to Cannonball Adderley live. I own 3 of his live CDs, "Mercy Mercy", "At the Lighthouse", "Live in sanfrancisco"..

The first link is to the song mercy mercy which was a fair hit in the early 60s. The 2nd is producer and riverside records founder Orrin Keepnews talking about the band. The third is from his Brazilian bossa nova album.

Some of the best alto sax you will ever hear! Brother Nat is a great cornet player.

I agree and interesting enough one of the best versions of "Take the A train" is also on that same album! "Study of Brown" is an all time classic!

I own every Brown & roach CD and listen to them all the time. I just wish they could have made more but Brownie's tragic death in a car crash when he was just 25 ended that. Crap!

The only Adderley CD I have is "Something Else". I got it with a Miles Davis "Early Years" box set... It's one of those CD's that was in my collection for years before I started listening to it. It's actually a really good CD. Although people generally know is name (no doubt because of the cool nickname) he is definitely one of those guys who gets overlooked in discussions of all-time jazz greats.

When it comes to Clifford...I only own "Study in Brown" and a Verve comp "Clifford Brown's Finest Hour" (the Verve "Finest Hour" comps are actually pretty decent). I'd actually never heard of the guy until I read about him in one of Nat Hentoff's books about a decade ago. You can't help but wonder how his style would have matured if he'd had the chance to play for a few more years. He's definitely one of those artists whose talents are apparent on the first listen... and when he's playing with Roach's guys it's pure ear candy.

I think he's the first guy people think of when pointing out how overrated Miles Davis is. I always find the criticism of Davis bothersome... there's no doubt Davis didn't have Brown's chops, but Miles' fame isn't due to his technical skills but rather his musical vision. I'd have to say at this point I'd rather listen to Brown than Miles, but I'll always give Davis a lot of credit for the the way he pushed the limits of jazz and created music that appealled to a crossover audience.

This is a little different, but it's from one of my all-time fave albums regardless of genre. The album is the self-titled debut from an uber-obscure group called "SuperGenerous". The group in reality is a duo consisting of Canadian guitarist Kevin Breit and Brazillian percussionist Cyro Batista. I've had this album for a decade and still listen to it as much as ever (great driving music). It's got such a unique feel, and so virtually unknown that I always try to get people to give it a listen... on the off chance they might be drawn to it's offbeat charm. Cyro's stuff is a little different but once you get a feel for what he's up to it's quite interesting. Kevin is a beast; one of the best guitarists on the planet

If you have the time gives these two tracks a listen...

I agree with you but there were a dozen or so great trumpet players that combined don't get 5% of the attention miles got and i think that is wrong. Kenny Dorham, Blue Mitchell, Art farmer, Nat Adderley, Booker Little, Harry "sweets" Edison are some of the guys i listen to all the time and just as often as miles.

The album you referenced is an example. Under cannonball's name it is really a partnership between he and miles but people think of it as a Miles album.

"Something Else" is considered by many to be one the best jazz albums of that era.

Today it is 1970s jazz-rock fusion and the best jazz-rock fusion album alltime is Billy Cobham's Spectrum.
