Today it is Blue's Moods by Blue Mitchell a quartet set Blue did for riverside. Blue joined up with Horace silver shortly after signing with Riverside so from 1958-1962 he played with one of the world's most popular jazz combos with Silver while in his spare time did his own albums as leader for Riverside and they are fantastic.

When Silver regrouped Blue became leader with his old silver mates and recorded several albums on blue note. All of them also classics.

The studio lineup at riverside at this time was maybe better than at blue note. Wynton Kelly, Philly Joe Jones, Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Drew, Cedar Walton among others.

Blue sure played a sweet trumpet.

I love Rebirth! Saw them live in New Orleans my first trip to Mardi Gras, when I was in college. After the show I asked them to come and play at our frat house. They agreed and 2 months later, I was helping them set up out on our lawn. Great guys and a great sound.

Rebirth sound pretty amazing. I'm so jealous of the music scene you guys have in Nashville. I've actually been pretty fortunate when it comes to seeing live acts, but nothing beats having a thriving local scene. For a few years in the nineties I lived directly above a little jazz club in Toronto... it was incredible.

And in the beginning there was Louis...

Miles Davis totally hated Armstrong's bug eyed big smile look he considered it totally uncle tom but he never denied his incredible talent.

Miles came from a wealthy family in Illinois and had the chance to go to Julliard while Armstrong came from a very poor neighborhood in New Orleans. I wouldn't blame Armstrong for anything he did.

Armstrong was actually 2nd trumpet in the King Oliver Creole band and came to Chicago with the band. He married the piano player and started his own thing.

Armstrong was rejected by many of the people whose music he influenced most. Often his mannerisms were likened to old time minstrel acts. Honestly, the clips above of Armstrong are telling. The filmmakers of the time could dress him up in any manner they wished in an effort to demean him, but as soon as he put horn to lips or started singing... his genius was undeniable. I think his mannerisms on stage were just a reflection of his natural persona. In the end Armstrong was right; it was the genius of his music that eventually won out over any problems that people had with how he allowed himself to be potrayed in film or his stage persona.

Considering where he came from and how he was perceived through the years, the reality that no single artist was ever more influencial on American popular music than Louis is truly incredible.

One of my fave tracks from Ellington and his band. It's the tune that made tenor sax player Paul Gonsalves a sensation at the Newport Jazz Fest in 58. Sam Woodyard (drums), Paul Tizol (trombone) and Cat Anderson (trumpet) are also killin it here. Not sure who the bass player is... but me likes. Sadly Gonsalves destroyed himself with drugs and alcohol.
