    Didn't check, but pretty sure you can separate from the majority of the atmosphere at around 70 miles above Earth. Where did you get those numbers?

    Am I missing something?

    But does go on to say that the first station will be about 22,000 feet. So you're right.

    Math works out to about 360 mph. 60,000 miles divided by 168 hours ( 7 days). Think of it like a cruise...only into space. Great views along the way.

    Getting far enough away to be out of the "gravity well" is the point. Getting out of the atmosphere is only part of the way. Have to get to the point where the earth no longer "pulls you back" Then launching to deep space is much, much cheaper.
