    NFL MOCK DRAFT

    1.
    Oakland Raiders:
    JaMarcus Russell
    Quarterback / LSU
    6’6”/ 260#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.85

With his size and purely gifted athleticism, Russell is bigger than most of the linebackers who will be blitzing him, and will be bigger than even some of the defensive ends trying to bring him down. JaMarcus has a huge arm with good touch and he plays faster than his timed speed. A bit raw, Russell will at times looks totally lost. He tries to rely on his arm and forces the ball into spots he shouldn't, which could create some problems.

The Raiders have a question in about every area on their offense. They need a QB more than they need a WR. So why JaMarcus Russell and not Quinn Brady? JaMarcus has great poise in the pocket, he can throw on the run, he is huge, and he can throw the ball 85 yards. Mainly he gets my nod at #1 over Brady Quinn because he outperformed Quinn in the Sugar Bowl. I thought about Calvin Johnson here but the Raiders still have the two talented receivers in Randy Moss and Jerry Porter. They won’t invest in Joe Thomas as they have a ton invested in Robert Gallery. Adrian Peterson was also considered however LaMont Jordan still has the tools to handle the running back position.

    2.
    Detroit Lions:
    Brady Quinn
    Quarterback / Notre Dame
    6’4” / 225#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.75

Quinn is arguably the smartest quarterback in this draft, and has spent the past two seasons running a pro-style offense under Charlie Weiss. He shows a strong arm with an excellent touch. He shows a good understanding of the game, for a college Quarterback. He also has enough mobility to elude pressure and create time for his receivers.

Detroit has four possible choices here in my opinion. Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, and Brady Quinn. They can’t take Adrian Peterson because Kevin Jones has done a great job. With Jones doing a great job, their line although not great at pass blocking are opening up the run. So why would a team pick an Offensive Tackle like Thomas, unless their desperate? As for Calvin Johnson he is probably the player with the most talent here. But Roy Williams has been amazing and the Lions faithful would string Matt Millen up if he drafted yet another receiver with their first pick. Anyone remember Charles Rogers and Mike Williams??? So the Lions are left with Brady Quinn. They know Jon Kitna is only a temporary solution for the Quarterback spot and Quinn is arguably the most NFL ready prospect of any in the Draft. Look for Quinn to spend a year learning from Kitna, as Carson Palmer did for the Bengals.

    3.
    Cleveland Browns:
    Adrian Peterson
    Running Back / Oklahoma
    6’2” / 220#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.55

Adrian Peterson is a real workhorse, a rare running back who has the ability to take an offense on his back and carry them. He has the ability to lower his shoulder and punish a defender, or make a cut and dash past them. Peterson has good field vision, and runs hard. Adrian is also very tough near the goal line. He missed a lot of time with a shoulder injury and a high ankle sprain that keeps popping up. Between the injuries and how much the Sooners used him, there is concern that he may not last long. His skills as a receiver are a work-in-progress and his blocking ability leaves a lot to the imagination.

This pick came real close to being a coin flip between Joe Thomas and Adrian Peterson. Just like the Raiders the Browns have needs all over their offense. The Quarterback position is not working with Charlie Frye or Ken Dorsey. However with both Russell and Quinn disappearing ahead of them, that will remain an issue. As for the proponents of best player available, then Calvin Johnson should be my pick. Wait about the only thing the Browns had last season was a couple of decent targets in Tight End Kellen Winslow and Wide Receiver Braylon Edwards. Joe Thomas is the best Offensive Tackle in this years draft bar none. There are not many rookies who can come out and dominate at left Offensive Tackle in the NFL. Yes the Brownies Offensive Line did suck but how can you put all of the blame on them when Reuben Droughns is your answer at running back? Their Center LeCharles Bentley will return from his season-ending injury next year and should provide more push upfront. The Browns in my opinion are very desperate for a playmaker. Adrian Peterson will provide them with just that.

    4.
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
    Calvin Johnson
    Wide Receiver / Georgia Tech
    6’5” / 235#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.45

Calvin Johnson is simply incredible and in my opinion the best athlete available in this years draft. Johnson has the ability to make an entire offense better, a skill usually only seen in QB’s and some RB’s. Johnson has very soft hands, he is fast and big. He will dominate many corners in the NFL with his size alone, speed, and incredible vertical leap. (47” is the rumor) Johnson has tremendous body control and has the ability to free himself up at the point of attack in bump and run. To me he is worthy of the Top one or two pick, but need at picks 1-3 outweigh the best available argument. Calvin’s downfield blocking leaves a bit to be desired, but so does the downfield blocking of most receivers. He has sometimes lost his concentration when his Yellow Jackets had a big lead.

Tampa Bay had a bad year in 2006, with injuries being a big part of it. Chuckie’s Bucs are not the same team they once were, primarily on Offense. Obviously, with both Quinn and Russell off the board a Quarterback will not be taken. So should the Bucs take Joe Thomas, Alan Branch, or Gaines Adams? Simeon Rice is still a great player which eliminates the need for Gaines. Tampa’s line was really one dimensional after Simms went down which makes it harder for the line. So they will pass on Joe Thomas as well. I really did not have to think about this next comparison for very long. I think the Buccaneers like Calvin Johnson over Michigan Defensive Tackle Alan Branch. Branch is a terrific athlete but the need for a Wide Receiver is greater. Galloway is 37 years old and he will not get any younger. They need to find out if Chris Simms is the real deal and there is no better way to do it than to give him the best target available.

    5.
    Arizona Cardinals:
    Joe Thomas
    Offensive Tackle / Wisconsin
    6”8” / 315#
    40-Yard Dash: 5.05

The Badgers Joe Thomas is very athletic for a big man. He uses his hands and feet very well, locking onto his man and very rarely letting the defender get by him, often compared to the Seahawks Walter Jones. Thomas recognizes and diagnoses blitzes well, and will pick up the right man, which is a good trait for a left side Offensive Tackle. Thomas lacks some in the run game, as he's not quite as powerful as his size would suggest. Joe is more of a finesse player than a mauler. Has had some injury issues, most notably a knee tear during the 2005 season’s bowl game. While maybe not as good as some of the top offensive tackles in last year's draft. Thomas is most certainly the single-best offensive line prospect in this year's draft, and stands to be a top-five pick in this year's draft.

It all starts on the line of scrimmage and the porous Arizona offense needs help. Two things throw at you. As a team last year the Cards rushing average was 88.5 yards per game. There were seven individual backs that bettered Arizona’s team average. Also they allowed 35 Quarterback sacks. They have offensive weapons all over with Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Edgerrin James, and Matt Leinart; however they are really quite useless without a line. This has been a problem area for the Cardinals for quite a while now. Thomas will have a huge impact on strengthening the Cardinal offensive line. The Cards get lucky once again as with Leinart falling last season Thomas falls into their laps this year.

    6.
    Washington Redskins:
    Jamaal Anderson
    Defensive End / Arkansas
    6’6” / 280#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.90

Big and surprisingly athletic for his size, Anderson can dominate opposing tackles with his power and a very surprising burst off the edge. Jamaal is already big however he has the frame to add more bulk, enough to play end in a 3-4 or take an under-tackle role in a 4-3 defense. In my opinion, with his style Anderson is probably best suited for end. Anderson is very raw. His technique can be somewhat sloppy, and he frequently gets by on his sheer strength. Anderson is a high-quality prospect with the potential to be the next Reggie White. I do think that Jamaal should have stayed for his senior year.

The Washington Redskins were a major disappointment this year. They spent last off season throwing owner Daniel Snyder’s money at a bunch of average Wide Receivers and they completely neglected their defensive line. The Redskins were absolutely horrible at playing against the pass last season. In fact they gave up the most touchdowns through the air. The Skins have just four choices with their sixth pick. Defensive End’s Jamaal Anderson and Gaines Adams, Defensive Tackle Alan Branch or Cornerback Leon Hall. So why am I taking Jamaal Anderson instead of a guy like Michigan’s Cornerback Leon Hall? Well, defending the pass starts with a good pass rush. Last year the Redskins had a total of 19 sacks. Shawne Merriman had 17 sacks in just 12 games. The glaring need for help on the defensive line is evident. So why Anderson over Gaines or Branch? In my opinion Jamaal Anderson simply just has more potential to add to the sack total than either of the others.

    7.
    Minnesota Vikings:
    Gaines Adams
    Defensive End / Clemson
    6’5” / 260#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.60

A true sack artist, and extremely explosive off the line of scrimmage. Adams can often turn the corner before the tackle he's lining up against can even get into his protection. His use of hands and sheer elusive ability confounded even many of the elite tackles he has faced during his collegiate days. He possesses the sheer athleticism to play rush Outside Line Backer in a 3-4 scheme as well as his natural 4-3 Defensive End spot. Adams is a bit undersized for his position at the NFL level. He also occasionally seems to be reluctant to play against the run, which is a big no-no in the pros. Those two factors combined seem to suggest that he could be a situational pass-rusher. One of the top overall DE prospects in the draft, his stock is only heightened by the potential for him to be a DeMarcus Ware type.

The Vikings have quite a few different needs that must be addressed. They do not have a viable receiving threat other than Troy Williamson who has the speed, but is lacking in technique. This immediately brings to mind both Ted Ginn Jr. and Dwayne Jarrett as options. The Viking defense has the best combination there is at defensive tackle, however without any presence at the end position both get double teamed frequently. With the addition of a pass rushing Defensive End the Vikings defense improves dramatically and thus the reasoning for grabbing Gaines Adams here. Look for the Vikings to address the receiver problem later or via free-agency.

    8.
    Houston Texans:
    Alan Branch
    Defensive Tackle / Michigan
    6”6” / 330#
    40-Yard Dash: 5.10

Alan Branch is the biggest, strongest, and toughest defensive lineman in this years NFL draft. He's an absolute terror against the run, but is somehow still quick enough to disengage from an offensive lineman almost at will and get to the quarterback in a hurry. Even with how big he is, he has the quickness to play end in a 3-4 formation as well as nose tackle in the same, and has the overall ability to play either tackle spot in the 4-3. Branch can be sometimes inconsistent, and he takes more plays off than you'd like. He will then subsequently get blown off the line. Quite possibly the best overall tackle in the draft. He has a long ways to go until he reaches his full potential, which in its self is frightening given how good he can be when he gives 100%.

No one really expected much out of the Texans this year and no one will probably expect much out of them next year. Houston has holes all over the place, on offense their line is below average and you have a Quarterback in David Carr who really hasn't shown much. Are Ron Dayne and Walli Lundy the answer at running back? If Peterson was available he would go here. With that said The Texans defense has a gapping hole every where you look. In the secondary, upfront, and the linebackers are pretty bad except for DeMeco Ryans. So after telling you all of this with holes everywhere the Texans shouldn't really draft by "need" but by best available. Alan Branch is definitely the best available player at #8 and should bolster what defense the Texans muster.

    9.
    Miami Dolphins:
    Leon Hall
    Cornerback / Michigan
    5’11” / 195#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.45

Leon Hall is very physical, enough so as to play with the big receivers, yet fast enough to cover the quick receivers. Excels in zone coverage, and is very good at man-to-man. He's a smart and very fluid athlete without a major hole in his game. Hall can come up and support the run well and is an excellent blizter. Hall is fast, but doesn't quite possess the elite speed of a true corner. As a result, he can have trouble covering speed routes. He's also not the greatest leaper, so he'll have trouble in the red zone against the taller receivers. Hall should be a good solid corner for the Fins. He often draws comparison to the Buccaneers Ronde Barber.

Some will say that the Dolphins need to address their aging defensive line. However, it was excellent last year. They could use a Linebacker, but really they have more glaring needs. On offense their line is below average, but to take a lineman here would be quite a reach. You could say Wide Receivers but that wouldn't be their biggest need. You have to give him a shot to prove what he can do when he is healthy. Their secondary has really been their biggest issue. As a team they had 8 interceptions in 2006. It is pretty obvious that right now the Dolphins need help in their secondary; none of their Cornerbacks are deserving starters. To me Leon Hall could really get their defensive back field in motion.

    10.
    Atlanta Falcons:
    Leron Landry
    Safety / LSU
    6’2” / 187#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.48

Landry is the second best defensive back in the draft and is an instant starter because he is a flat out playmaker. He has great size for a Safety and although he is probably not quite as fast as others he is a very hard hitter who is a total ball hawk. Landry will absolutely hit you right square in the mouth. Landry may be the best pure free safety in the draft. His coverage skills in center field are virtually second to none. Atlanta may try to have him gain some weight so as to help improve his durability. Landry will sometimes go for the big play instead of the sure thing.

The safety situation down in Atlanta is very bad. It was either Laron Landry or Florida’s Reggie Nelson for the Falcons at #10. The Falcons lack consistency in their secondary, and even though they brought in Lawyer Milloy they still need help at Safety. Lawyer has not been the answer with no interceptions and 2 sacks. Their defensive line looks good and their linebackers are at least average. On offense they could use a Wide Receiver so they could possibly take Ted Ginn Jr. here but I expect Atlanta to address this problem in the 2nd round.

    11.
    San Francisco 49ers:
    Reggie Nelson
    Safety / Florida
    6’1” / 193#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.48

Nelson is a natural athlete. He possesses very good speed and quickness with terrific range. He is a ball hawk who can be an impact playmaker in the Niner’s secondary. Reggie plays with very good instincts and is aggressive, physical and a big hitter who is more than willing to come up and help support the run. His versatility enables him to be able to play multiple positions. Reggie has a knack for being in on the action.

San Francisco's really improved their offense last year. Quarterback Alex Smith looked much better than he did during his rookie season. Frank Gore is now an elite Running Back. The offensive line also looked much better. They may look to Ted Ginn Jr. or Dwayne Jarrett to help a weak receiving corps. However, on defense the 49ers look like Swiss cheese, they have holes everywhere. They should probably just take the best available defender and in this case Florida’s Reggie Nelson is the guy they want. The Niners are $37 million under the cap so this pick could change depending on their off season signings.

    12.
    Buffalo Bills:
    Levi Brown
    Offensive Tackle / Penn State
    6’4” / 328#
    40-Yard Dash: 5.25

Levi has excellent size with a huge frame and some long arms. A great athlete with good quickness for his size. Brown moves well and has quick feet. Once he is able to lock on to the opposition it's all over. Levi slides well and can handle the speed rush off the edge. Strong and has a stunning initial punch. Will be a solid run blocker for the Bills. Brown has been a 4 year starter with experience versus the top Big-Ten competition.

This may be a reach for the Buffalo Bills filling need as opposed to best available. However, the Bills made it clear last year that they aren't afraid to reach for a specific position as they took Donte Whitner 8th overall last year. With Russell and Quinn out of the picture at Quarterback and Brian Brohm going back to Louisville, I don't expect them to take a QB. They had a pretty good defense overall last year. They have been out of the playoffs since 1999, the longest streak in the NFL, and I feel that their Offensive Line has held them back in the past. Levi Brown is clearly the 2nd best Offensive Tackle in the draft.

    13.
    St. Louis Rams:
    Amobi Okoye
    Defensive Tackle / Louisville
    6’1” / 320#
    40-Yard Dash: 5.15

Okoye is an extremely strong solid athlete with good measurables. He is tough against the run and is able to take on multiple blockers, when double teamed. Amobi gets a good push and will collapse the pocket on opposing quarterbacks. He can shed blocks and clog up the middle of the line. Okoye has great instincts for the game and is still developing, as he will only be a 20-year-old rookie. A smart player who is mature beyond his years and wants to improve his game. Quick and will penetrate and rush the passer. Still has a ton of un-tapped potential and he will benefit under the tutoring of pro coaching. Doesn't always play with proper leverage. He needs to develop some additional pass rush moves. A native of Nigeria who tested into the 9th grade as a 12-year-old and played at Louisville as a 16-year-old true freshman in 2003.

I seriously doubt that the Rams will be drafting an offensive player at this spot. Defense was the biggest issue for the Rams last season. Since the Rams were in the Super Bowl years ago they lost two key players on the Defensive Line, Winstrom and Pickett. They do not have the same push up the middle as they had during their playoff runs and it really has hurt their team as they went a poor 8-8. I look for them to revamp their line to create more pressure on the QB and do a better job stopping the run. They also could use an outside linebacker but I feel none are good enough to be taken 13th overall. Patrick Willis a linebacker from Ole Miss is also a possibility, but I feel Okoye is their man.

    14.
    Carolina Panthers:
    Patrick Willis
    Inside Linebacker / Mississippi
    6’2” / 240#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.60

Willis is a true athlete with excellent instincts, good speed and quickness with the range to go from sideline-to-sideline. Patrick is a big hitter and very reliable tackler. He is strong, powerful, and versatile enough that he could conceivably play either inside or outside. Willis is a good pass rusher. Moves well and is adequate in coverage but nothing special and he can still stand to improve some in that area...Needs to bulk up and get a little bigger. Plays too high at times. Can be overwhelmed by massive blockers. Patrick is a great person and player who will be an asset to the Panthers both on and off the field. One of the best linebackers available in this year’s draft.

Many of the Panthers faithful fans have questioned Quarterback Jake Delhomme’s ability to get the Panthers back to a Super Bowl. If Carolina was going to take a QB it would have been Brohm. Last year the Panthers defense was pretty good all around. The Defensive Line is awesome, the secondary isn't bad enough to address in the first round, and their linebackers are good if healthy. Is Dan Morgan ever healthy? He's a heck of a Middle Linebacker but not when watching from the sidelines. Patrick Willis is a fast, true-tackler, and can affect the team even more than Morgan has, plus he will stay healthy. If the Panthers let Mike Rucker walk this year they will need to fill that void. They could use a strong side end to hold down the run and also get to the QB, opposite of Julius Peppers. If they go this direction Georgia’s Quentin Moses or Nebraska’s Adam Carricker are options.

    15.
    Pittsburgh Steelers:
    Quentin Moses
    Defensive End / Georgia

Moses is an outstanding athlete Who is a natural pass rusher who just knows how to get after the quarterback. Quentin is very quick with a great burst to close. Moses will make a lot of plays behind the line. He is versatile and plays fast moving well in pursuit and covers a lot of ground. Has a nice frame with long arms although he is a bit undersized and needs to add some weight, but he has the frame to get bigger. Is basically a liability against the run at this point.

The Steelers do not have many gaping holes on either side of the ball in my opinion. The Steelers really like building up their Defense via the draft and I think they will look to do it again in this year’s draft. One position where many problems have surfaced from is the Defensive End spot. They lost Kimo von Oelhoffen last year to Free Agency and haven't had a steady replacement since. Quentin Moses is a perfect fit and should adjust to a 3-4 very easy. I also considered Notre Dame Defensive End Victor Abiamiri but feel Moses fits the 3-4 scheme better. Another possibility was at Cornerback the University of Pittsburgh’s Darrelle Revis an option.

    16.
    Green Bay Packers:
    Marshawn Lynch
    Running Back / California
    5’11” / 215#
    40-Yard Dash: 4.50

Marshawn Lynch has excellent size and speed for his position, and uses all of his skill all the time. He hits the hole fast and like a hammer. He is very hard to bring down when he hits his stride. Lynch has a quick and hard burst, and seems to be easily able to see cutback lanes as they form. He shows soft hands out of the backfield, and having him as an outlet option will endear him to Brett Favre his Quarterback. Lynch will try to create a big play often cutting to the outside when the better and smarter run is between the tackles. His blocking leaves quite a bit to be desired. Marshawn has also had some lingering and recurring hand and arm injuries.

To determine what will happen here we really need to see if Ahman Green is resigned. If it was up to me I would not resign Ahman Green. Although he has played decent the Packers have a superb offensive line now and Ahmans fumbles have really hurt them in the past. I really like the Packers defense. Their Defensive Line is stacked, their Line Backers have drastically improved with last years first round choice AJ Hawk, and their Cornerbacks have been brilliant. The one question has been safety and I think it is very possible for the Packers to take Michael Griffin from Texas in this spot, but, I think their offense is going to need rebuilding. It isn’t too tough to gauge where they go with their pick, especially if the Pac-10 offensive player of the year Marshawn Lynch considered by some to be the best RB on the board is still available. If he falls this far, he is a steal for the Packers.

    17.
    Jacksonville Jaguars:
    Paul Posluszny
    Outside Linebacker / Penn State
    6’2” / 238#
    40-Yard Dash 4.65

Posluszny is extremely instinctive with good speed and quickness. He is mobile with great range. Paul is very aggressive, tough, and physical. He is a solid and reliable tackler with a burst to close. Posluszny is a decent pass rusher and blitzer. Intensity and competitiveness ...Has a motor that never stops and a phenomenal work ethic. A solid athlete who holds his own in coverage. He is a very smart playmaker and a team leader. He still could stand to pack on a few additional pounds. Will play out of control at times and has a bit of trouble shedding blockers and working his way through the trash...Tore the PCL and MCL in his right knee in the Orange Bowl as a junior.

When Mike Peterson went down last year we really saw how bad the Jags Linebackers really were. As of now their Outside Backers are Griesen and Ingram. Both these guys don't have any skill whatsoever. They need someone who can stop the run and stop the pass. Penn State is one of the best Line Backer schools out there. Just ask Lavar Arrington (I know he was injured this year but he is a great player). Posluszny is one of two college players to win the Butkus award twice and we can't forget as a Junior he out did A.J. Hawk, who went 5th overall last year.

    18.
    Cincinnati Bengals:
    Darrelle Revis
    Cornerback / Pittsburgh
    6’0” / 200#
    40-Yard Dash 4.45

Revis is an excellent cover man. He has excellent quickness, and shows the ability to easily mirror receivers throughout their route, and has the speed to keep up with them down the field. When the ball is in the air, Revis has the natural instinct to pick it up and make a play on the ball. He also possesses good size, and is not afraid to mix it up in run support. Revis has also shown the ability to be a factor as a punt returner, and could bring an upgrade to some teams return game. Revis still needs a bit more work on his game. He relies on his physical talent too much, and allows separation to receivers, only to recover because of his speed. He will also need to learn how to be more physical off the snap against bigger receivers. Darrelle is arguably one of the top two Cornerbacks in the draft. He will become a very good cover man early in his career with the Bengals.Darrelle is a ball hawk from Pittsburgh. He kind of reminds me of Ty Law because it seems like he’s always in the play, or he’s in the right place at the right time.

The Bengals still do not have a consistent defense and will probably spend this entire draft trying to accomplish just that. Georgia’s Charles Johnson is a player who not only has upside but is also a proven player against major competition. Even if the Bengals do not lose Justin Smith they need another pass rusher, Johnson is the best left. I also considered Ohio State Defensive Tackle Quinn Pitcock here. This year Bengals played Indy on Monday Night and it was not a game they want to remember. Peyton Manning passed for 4 TDs that game including 3 to Marvin Harrison. It is pretty clear the Bengals need some secondary help as well and they should probably just draft the best Defensive Back available being Pittsburgh’s Cornerback Darrelle Revis. I go with best defensive player available here and that is Darrelle Revis.

    19.
    Tennessee Titans:
    Ted Ginn Jr.
    Wide Receiver / Ohio State
    6’0” / 175#
    40-Yard Dash 4.30
There isn’t a more explosive player in the country than Ted Ginn. Anytime he touches the ball, he is a threat to take it the distance. His combination of quickness, speed, and acceleration is phenomenal. He has true home run ability as a receiver and as a returner. He has taken to the wide receiver spot quickly and produced quite a bit despite his lack of experience at the position. He needs work running routes. He has a very thin build and lacks the strength to be a threat over the middle.

What a great turnaround for the Titans. Going into the season everyone picked them to tank and after a 0-5 start it certainly looked that way. To keep their winning ways alive the Titans could use more weapons to help the growth of Vince Young. Vince making noise as a rookie? No that can't be possible I thought he was going to be benched and learn for 2 years...Guess Again. Vince Young was by far the best rookie this past season and he didn't look like a rookie. One thing we saw last year with the Titans is their Wide Receiver corps is probably the 2nd worst in the league (Atlanta being the worst) and I think they would love to give their young Quarterback a great Wide Receiver. USC’s Dwayne Jarrett is a possible choice here. He showed the world what type of player he is when he trounced all over Notre Dame and then did even more to boost his stock when he absolutely destroyed the highly touted Michigan Wolverine secondary in the Rose Bowl. At the end of the day he is in my opinion the second best Receiver left in the draft. In that case Ohio States Ted Ginn Jr. is my favorite receiver left in this years draft and a real steal for the Titans if still available at #19. Ginn is extremely fast and well disciplined The Titans well address their Defense in the 2nd round, but from this round their first priority is giving Vince what he needs.

    20.
    New York Giants:
    Marcus McCauley
    Cornerback / Fresno State
    6’1” / 205#
    40-Yard Dash 4.35

McCauley hasprototypical size with outstanding speed. He is athletic and quick with a great burst. He is very physical and aggressive with pretty good ball skills. Marcus has great body control, leaping ability and timing. He is a sure tackler who will support versus the run. With superb instincts for the game, he is able to play and excel in either man or zone coverage. Will gamble and take too many risks. Hands are somewhat questionable and he will drop some interceptions. Could be a little stronger. Marcus has all of the physical tools you look for in a top cornerback and should be able to step in and start for the Giants. The type of lockdown corner that every team is constantly searching for.

I think the Giants really wanted Marshawn Lynch to fall to them to replace Tiki Barber. But he didn’t so the Giants need to bolster their defense. Sam Madison has really been a huge disappointment in the Giant’s secondary. The Giants will bring in a Cornerback here and must choose between in my opinion Fresno State’s Marcus McCauley and Daymeion Hughes from California. I feel McCauley is the top corner remaining and will go to the Giants at #20.

    21.
    Denver Broncos:
    Victor Abiamiri
    Defensive End / Notre Dame
    6’4” / 270#
    40-Yard Dash 4.75

Abiamiri is an excellent athlete with great quickness and a real burst. He has pretty good size with long arms and the frame to get bigger...Was very productive. Packs a very good initial punch. He is strong and stout at the point. Victor is versatile and is fluid enough to drop into pass coverage. He is a great pass rusher who can terrorize opposing quarterbacks. A solid tackler with good range and will make plays in while pursuit. He is smart and a very hard worker with great intangible value .A ton of experience against the top competition. Needs to add some weight and is still somewhat raw and needs to refine his technique. May be looked at as a potential outside linebacker in a three-four style scheme. Made a name for himself when he dominated Winston Justice in '05. He certainly passes the eyeball test and has everything that you look for physically. And the scary part is he's still improving. Higher on my board than others I have seen

The Broncos have been searching for a Pass rusher for quite a while now. Denver needs a pass rush. If he goes here he upgrades an already very fast and athletic defense.

    22.
    Dallas Cowboys:
    Justin Blaylock
    Guard / Texas
    6’4” / 330#
    40-Yard Dash 5.10

Justin is a strong and powerful blocker who displays a good base and excellent use of hands. He balances well, and is very hard for all but the most powerful defensive tackles to disrupt. Blalock is a bear in the running game, often driving defenders back to the second level. He's arguably the biggest mauler and the nastiest offensive lineman in this year's NFL draft. The top guard prospect in the draft, and has the versatility to play right tackle as well. Blalock is not athletic enough to pull well or often, his footwork will occasionally get him in some trouble, taking him out of position to make a block, especially in pass protection.

The Cowboys have a few pieces of the puzzle in place but need to add youth to their offensive line. An offensive guard would be a nice fit for the Cowboys. Protecting Quarterback Tony Romo and opening holes for Jones and Barber should be a top priority for the new Cowboys staff. Texas’ Justin Blaylock would be a welcome addition to the Cowboy offensive line. However, the Cowboys defense needs a big body for the middle. In a three – four style defense the Nose Tackle really needs to stop the run for it to work successfully. If the Nose Tackle can stop the run, then the Outside Linebackers can blitz. If North Carolina State’s big boned DeMarcus Tyler can stop the run, and get a good pass rush at times, the Dallas Cowboys’ could once again be Super Bowl contenders.Dallas’s secondary was terrible last season, so a playmaking cornerback to put opposite of Terrence Newman could be a major shot in the arm for the Cowboys. Daymeion Hughes out of California is a flat out playmaker and an excellent ball hawk. He is considered to be suspect against a good route runner, so picking him here makes sense for the Cowboys. Of the three I believe Guard Justin Blaylock will provide the biggest impact and will be the choice.

    23.
    Kansas City Chiefs:
    Dwayne Jarrett
    Wide Receiver / USC
    6’5” /210#
    40-Yard Dash 4.55

USC’s Dwayne Jarrett physically has great size and leaping ability. Great corner-route and fade-route runner, especially in the red zone where those routes let him use his vertical ability to its best. Jarrett is considered a playmaker-to-be by many draft analysts. He's a surprisingly good downfield blocker for a receiver of his type, using his hands well and avoiding planting his feet. Jarrett's biggest issues are that he has far from ideal speed, and as big he is, he doesn't play terribly physically. More physical corners will likely be able to shut him down in the NFL. His route-running and coverage judgment skills leave much to be desired as well. Jarrett has also displayed some potential character concerns recently. Rated higher on some boards than Ted Ginn Jr. his lack of ideal speed has him falling on my board, much to the Chiefs delight.

Now that their defense isn't the laughing stock of the league and they have Larry Johnson. Tony Gonzalez is getting older and less-productive each year. They really want to give Quarterback Trent Green a weapon. Jarrett could really be great someday and the Chiefs biggest need is a WR. Let's also remember that Herman Edwards knows which Wide Receivers to draft. He drafted both Laverneus Coles and Santana Moss when he was the Jets head coach. Kansas City has had a need at WR for quite sometime now. Eddie Kennison is a good player, but he is not getting any younger and he could use some help. Jarrett is a big time player who has great size. He is a great value here and would be a big target in KC

    24.
    New England Patriots:
    Lawrence Timmons
    Outside Linebacker / Florida State
    6’3” / 230#
    40-Yard Dash 4.55
Playmaker is the best word that describes Florida States Lawrence Timmons as a football player. Whether he is attacking the line of scrimmage, rushing the passer, or dropping into coverage, he has shown the ability to make big plays in all facets of the game. He’s an excellent athlete that plays with big time intensity. He is aggressive on the field and flies allover the place to make plays. Timmons is a very good athlete that can really run. Timmons has a lean frame and will have to pack on more weight. His lack of bulk can give him some problems getting off blocks and bringing down bigger backs and tight ends in the open field. Sometimes he is too aggressive and will run himself out of plays as a result.

The New England Linebackers are getting old. Teddy Bruschi’s name did not come up once in the 2nd half of this years Super Bowl against the Colts. This becomes a need due to the factor of age and overall wear and tear on the veterans at the position. Mike Vrabel will be 32, Roosevelt Colvin will be 30, Tedy Bruschi will be 34, and if Junior Seau returns, he’ll be 38. The emergence of young linebacker Tully Banta-Cain has been a welcome development, but the team will need to add some youth. Quarterback Tom Brady would like some different targets to throw to, Reche Caldwell has come on strong, but the team still hasn’t seemed completely comfortable in trying to replace veteran receivers David Givens and Deion Branch. Chad Jackson is coming along, but there is still the feeling of need at the spot. South Carolina’s Sidney Rice or LSU’s Dwayne Bowe are both options here. I look for the Patriots to grab Timmons and address their need at Receiver with their next pick.

    25.
    New York Jets:
    Adam Carriker
    Defensive End / Nebraska
    6’6” / 295#
    40-Yard Dash 4.85

Carriker has excellent size and strength and the athleticism to go along with it. He is already bigger than a lot of NFL Defensive Ends, and has the strength to push tackles out of his way. He has the ability to bull rush lineman, and can also hold his ground at the point of attack. Carriker was a productive pass rusher in college, and knows how to get to the quarterback. He also has good straight-line speed for a player his size. He is a good athlete for a player his size. He probably lacks the explosive quality you look for in top tier defensive ends. He has bulked up to 295lbs this year, but he doesn’t look to have the same agility he had prior. Adam is a player that shows nice all around skills, and should be a complete defensive end at the next level. He may be best suited as a 3-4 end because of his size and power, and lack of explosive pass rush ability off the edge.

The loss of defensive end John Abraham after last season hurt the defensive unit. A nice prize through the draft would be a top-tier interior lineman that can plug up the middle and stop the run. Ohio States Quinn Pitcock and North Carolina State’s DeMarcus Tyler are both options here. But an athletic end like Abraham might be of considerable interest as well. With Nebraska’s Adam Carriker still available on my board I look for the Jets to grab him.

    26.
    Philadelphia Eagles:
    Michael Griffin
    Safety / Texas
    6’0” / 205#
    40-Yard Dash 4.45

Griffin is very smooth and athletic with great speed. Michael is tough, physical, aggressive, and a big time hitter. Covers a lot of ground and has a burst to close. Exceptional in coverage and supports the run well. He is a playmaker with good leaping ability and ball skills. Productive and has a lot of experience against some top notch competition. He is also an outstanding kick blocker and special teamer. Griffin will miss some tackles while trying to deliver the knock-out blow. Is not super instinctive and depends on his athleticism too much. Griffin will struggle with massive blockers in the box and often gets manhandled.

The Eagles could use a middle linebacker to help solidify the position for the future. Also, additional help at the outside linebacker spot would help since the position isn’t as strong as it once was. There’s youth and some talent, but they under-performed this season. One other spot that the Eagles will look to add a player is at safety. Brian Dawkins had a strong season, but he will turn thirty-four during the 2007 season, and depth is nearly nonexistent in the Philadelphia secondary. Michael Griffin out of Texas is a possibility here. They could also look at a Defensive Tackle such as North Carolina State’s DeMarcus Tyler or Ohio States Quinn Pitcock. I believe they will address their needs in the secondary and Michael Griffin will be their choice.

    27.
    New Orleans Saints:
    Daymeion Hughes
    Cornerback / California
    6’2” / 188#
    40-Yard Dash 4.55

A very good natural athlete with pretty good size. Hughes is a very instinctive playmaker with excellent ball skills. Very productive and came away with a lot of interceptions during his career. He is physical and will support the run. Experienced and a hard worker with good intangibles. He could be a special team’s ace.Does not have great timed speed, quickness or a burst to recover. Hughes will sometimes take too many chances and is susceptible to being fooled and will get burnt. He needs to get stronger.

New Orleans Quarterback Drew Brees has high hopes that they grab a Tight End with this pick. Brees has always targeted his Tight End; however he really does not have much to choose from currently. Arizona State’s Zach Miller and Miami’s Greg Olsen are in the mix here. The Saints defensive secondary really stood out as a glaring weakness this season. Fred Thomas is no longer a quality Cornerback and they need to get younger and faster there right away. They could grab California’s Daymeion Hughes or Aaron Ross out of Texas. The weakness in the New Orleans secondary outweighs a Tight End in my opinion. Therefore with this pick the Saints will choose Cornerback Daymeion Hughes.

    28.
    New England Patriots:
    Sidney Rice
    Wide Receiver /
    6’4” / 202#
    40-Yard Dash 4.45

Rice has excellent size with long arms and a rangy frame, with outstanding ball skills. Sidney is a smooth natural athlete and an excellent leaper. He has big, soft, and very reliable hands along with terrific body control. Rice seems to play faster than he times. Sidney has great hand - eye coordination. He will be a threat in the red zone. He is able to separate and is a great vertical threat often making spectacular catches. He was extremely productive and dominant in the SEC. Still has a wealth of potential. Doesn't have a lot of experience. Still kind of raw and needs to work on mastering the intricacy’s of the position. His timed speed is only average and needs to get stronger and could stand to add some weight.

Quarterback Tom Brady would like some different targets to throw too. Reche Caldwell came on strong but the team still hasn’t seemed completely comfortable in trying to replace veteran receivers David Givens and Deion Branch. Chad Jackson is coming along, but there is still a need at Wide Receiver. South Carolina’s Sidney Rice or LSU’s Dwayne Bowe are both options here. I look for the Patriots to grab Sidney Rice who in my opinion is a touch more valuable than Bowe.

    29.
    Baltimore Ravens:
    Michael Bush
    Running Back / Louisville
    6’3” / 247#
    40-Yard Dash 4.50
There isn’t a more powerful running back in this years draft class. Michael Bush is an absolute load to bring down. Not only does he have great size, but he is very strong, and will get the extra yardage when he hits a defender. What makes Bush a steal though, is his speed. He has the ability to hit the edge and reel off big runs. He is a fantastic athlete, and could have played a number of positions at Louisville. Bush uses that out of the backfield as a good receiver. Bush has very good long range speed, but he doesn’t reach top speed very fast. He also doesn’t change direction very easily. Michael Bush has a lot of potential and if healthy a workhorse back that can wear a team down. How quickly he is back at 100% is the main question.

The Ravens have a few needs including the thought of eventually replacing ageing Quarterback Steve McNair. With Quinn and Russell long gone, now is not the time. I look for the Ravens to cut Jamal Lewis before the running back receives a $5 million roster bonus next month. This makes there biggest need in my opinion to be a work horse running back to replace Lewis. Michael Bush from Louisville or perhaps Kenny Irons from Auburn considered. Bush in my opinion will make a fantastic replacement for Lewis and chosen here by the Ravens.

    30.
    San Diego Chargers:
    Robert Meachem
    Wide Receiver / Tennessee
    6’3” / 210 #
    40-Yard Dash 4.45

Robert Meachem is the total package at wide receiver. He has an excellent frame. He is tall, but has a solid build and the strength to overpower corners. Meachem has shown the ability to be an intermediate and red zone threat with his combination of size, strength, and athleticism. What makes him stand out though is his ability to move and make plays with the ball in his hands. Meachem has very good speed, and has the quickness to change direction and make defenders miss racking up yards after the catch. Robert has had issues dropping passes in the past, and has had problems believing in his own ability.

The offensive line isn’t a desperate need, but it would probably be a good idea to add some depth. Behind the starting guards there isn’t much making it a good idea for the Chargers to bring in depth for the offensive line. The Chargers have strength throughout their lineup, but a position worth adding to is Wide Receiver, Keenan McCardell isn’t getting any younger. Vincent Jackson appears ready to be a full-time starter, but he and the other young receivers are still developing. A top level receiver may be worth looking at here. Tennessee’s Robert Meachem or Dwayne Bowe from LSU are both good options. I feel that Meachem is the best fit and will be chosen here.

    31.
    Chicago Bears:
    Greg Olsen
    Tight End / Miami
    6’5” / 252#
    40-Yard Dash 4.75

Olsen has ideal height as well as the frame to get bigger and stronger. A terrific athlete with very good hands and plays faster than he times. Greg runs excellent routes and knows how to get open. He is a much better blocker than he is given credit for. Olsen can create after the catch. Somewhat of a wide receiver in a tight end's body and was the Hurricanes top target at times. He still has some potential for improvement. Greg Is also able to long-snap. Does not yet have the ideal bulk that you look for in a Tight End. His timed speed is only average and he won't break many tackles...Is not much of a vertical or deep threat.

The Bears have spent the last several drafts building one of the most impressive defenses in recent memory. I think they look to the other side of the ball in this draft and add the best Tight End in Olsen. Olsen adds another pass catcher for Bears Quarterback Rex Grossman who could use another Tight End with more upside than Desmond Clark. Olsen has tremendous hands, a big body, and very good speed. He has more potential than Arizona State’s Zach Miller the other premiere Tight End in this class.

    32.
    Indianapolis Colts:
    Buster Davis
    Linebacker / Florida State
    5’10” / 240#
    40-Yard Dash 4.70
Buster Davis is a very aggressive and instinctive linebacker. Best suited as a Weak Side Linebacker so he can blitz and chase.Buster is very quick, explosive, and the hardest hitter in this years draft. A ball of energy that has nose for making big hits. He reads and reacts as well as any player in this draft. On every snap, he is looking to knock down as many opponents as possible, and fly to the football. He quickly diagnoses the play, and is in on most of the action. With his quickness and instincts, Davis is always around the ball. He is the type of player that you try to stay away from on every play, and you know when he hits you. He is a field general that is a leader and teacher on and off the field. The obvious knock on Davis’ game is his lack of size. He would be lucky to measure out at his listed 5'10 height, and that is very undersized for the linebacker position. It also hinders his ability to take on blockers and get off to make the tackle. Davis is one of the best college linebackers you will find. While he does have a lot of things going for him the one thing you truly notice is how small he is.

The Indianapolis Colts will more than likely lose their weak side linebacker Cato June to free agency. The Colts were dismal during the regular season against the run and must improve on this. The addition of a true run stuffing linebacker would vastly improve the Colt defense. I considered both Inside Linebacker Buster Davis from Florida State and Oklahoma’s Outside Linebacker Rufus Alexander. Another area of interest is at Defensive Tackle with the status of Corey Simon and Monte Reagor not known at this time, a run stuffing Defensive Tackle could be a good pick here. I considered Ohio State’s Quinn Pitcock and North Carolina State’s DeMarcus Tyler. In my opinion the need for a Linebacker is greater than that of a Defensive Tackle. Therefore the Colts will add Buster Davis to their defense next year.

If still available at 19, Ted Ginn would be a great pickup for us considering pacman is still part of the roster. If not, i'd prefer using the #1 pick on defense to make up for pac's loss.

Meachem isn't worth it. Although I like Ginn, the fact that he's still got that ankle injury pestering him and has a slim build might not bode well for us. If we were going to go WR at 19 and Jarrett is there, we'd select him. However, I have the feeling we might go CB with our first round selection. With the pacman incident and the need for it there, I wouldn't be surprised if we took a CB at 19. Overall, good Mock. Nicely done Smitty.
