Shoney's Enters the Manning Fray

If Peyton Manning likes pancakes, specificially those at Shoney’s, he has a little extra incentive to sign with the Tennessee Titans.

Shoney’s has offered the free agent quarterback and former University of Tennessee star, a free stack of pancakes to sign with the Titans every day through his career in Nashville, according to an advertisement the company placed in The Tennessean on Friday.

The advertisement is an entire page in The Tennessean sports section’s page 7C.

In white bold letters the ad reads: ‘Peyton, Sign here and Tennessee Would Really Be Stacked,’ over a stack of pancakes.

Below the stack of pancakes, the advertisement states ‘Shoney’s CEO David Davoudpour wants to sweeten the deal. Sign with our hometown team and you’ll receive FREE PANCAKES EVERY DAY throughout your career here in Nashville. Let’s Win. And Let’s Eat!’

“The offer is legit,’’ Shoney’s director of marketing Damon Davoudpour said. “It’s a fun way to show our interest in getting Peyton Manning here and a fun way to get people of Nashville and the state of Tennessee excited about the possibility. This is huge. There is Peyton mania all over the place.’’

The ad concept was a collaboration between Shoney’s and its advertising agency Levenson & Hill Advertising based in Dallas.

Shoney’s chief executive officer David Davoudpour, described as a big Titans fan, approved the ad in “about four seconds,’’ said Mike Stopper, vice-president/branding & activation for Levenson & Hill.

“It’s not traditional advertising, but the idea is to show we are a local based company and have ties to the Nashville community and put (ourselves) out there to make it happen,’’ Stopper said. “It’s also a good way to get David out there show different things he does for the community.’’

Shoney’s guesses Manning is familiar with the restaurant’s pancakes from his college days because it has over 20 locations in the Knoxville area. However, Damon Davoudpour had no first-hand knowledge if Manning actually has frequented the restaurant or how he felt about Shoney’s menu.

If Manning signed with the Titans, the offer would stand for any of the Nashville area Shoney’s, Stopper said. A follow-up ad is being considered.

Shoney’s, headquartered on Elm Hill Pike, opened in 1947.
