I mean it's more than just the deep ball. He has to have the arm strength to make tough throws and fit the ball into tight spots using his power.

Now I like Ponder, probably more than any of the other QB's, so I would like to take him but I meant more than just the deep ball.

Proof of ignorance right here. Arm strength is not overrated, it is absolutely essential in the NFL. That 10 yard pass you're talking about to the sideline becomes a 25 yard pass from the middle of the field. It may only gain you 10 yards, but you still have to throw it more than 75 feet. The out route is arguably more important in determining arm strength than the deep ball for that very reason.

As for Ponder, the Senior Bowl is as much about the practices as it is about the game. I like Ponder, but he looked mediocre during the week, his deep ball to Hankerson was severely underthrown, and his average arm was obvious. But, his release looked great, very fast. He made quick decisions, and he wasn't hesitant with the ball. He may not fall to the 3rd round anymore, but if we could trade up late 2nd to take him, I'd be okay with that. Using the #40 pick overall on him might be too high.

Ignorance, then you go on to say nothing arguing. Any college QB can complete a 25 yard pass.

Ponder can make every NFL throw he needs to. Just like every other qb coming out of this draft.

This is why guys like Jamarcus Russell get drafted. People think arm strength is important while the most important attributes go unnoticed.

In a few years you'll have to add Ryan Mallett to that list. :grrhee:

Yep...At any level of football, accuracy is more important then arm strength. The only QB in this draft I would take in the first 2 rounds is Ponder....

I wouldn't mind Gabbert or Locker, but would HAVE to be in the second round. Slim chance that they would fall that far with the Bengals & Cardinals picking ahead of us in the 2nd.

I actually wouldn't be shocked with us taking Gabbert in the first. I have a feeling with Locker's poor performance, Mallett's character issues, and the questions around Newton, that Gabbert will be labeled as the only "franchise" QB in this draft as the process goes forward. I don't agree with it, but I could see it being the case. But I agree with you, if we took him or Locker in round 2 Id be fine with it, I just like Ponder more then Locker at this point.

I think that the Cardinals will take Gabbert with the 5th pick, so we shouldn't have to worry about that. As for the other 3 QBs I have no clue. Vikings & 49ers could go QB round 1. Maybe Seattle. Bengals maybe a QB in the 2nd if one falls.

I think Cam goes to the Vikings, Locker to Seattle, and I could see the Bengals in round 2 taking Mallett. The 49ers are the wild card as Harbaugh came out today and said he liked what he saw on tape in Alex Smith. He may believe he can groom him into being a good NFL QB, it also buys him a year to try to make a move to get Luck in next years draft.
