Vince Young is a dynamic player who is the best running quarterback in the league today. Young makes plays with the ball in his hands that few others can and he is extremely dangerous on quarterback draws, roll-outs and especially when a play breaks down. Problem is, he really can't throw the football that well. And because of that fact, maybe it's not such a bad thing for Tennessee that Young is out for 2-4 weeks with a knee injury.
His replacement, Kerry Collins, is the complete opposite. When the initial play doesn't go according to plan for Collins, bad things usually happen. He is immobile and the very definition of a pocket passer, and he sometimes tries to do too much to make something happen. But I stress the word "passer" because Collins throws the ball well and is far more accurate than Young.
Tennessee's wide receivers might be the worst group in the league and having Troy Aikman or John Elway throwing to them probably would not change that. However, Collins is a well-above average deep thrower and Young is awful on the deep ball, so having Collins behind center should give the offense more of a vertical presence. This could also potentially open up room underneath for what the Titans do best, which is run the ball. The Titans' running game is now a two-headed beast capable of big plays behind rookie Chris Johnson or pounding an opponent into submission with LenDale White.
The passing game, with Young under center, was very tight end-centric, and also looked to Johnson as a dump-off option or in a mismatch against a linebacker. With Collins in the lineup, though, Tennessee can at least threaten to pushing the ball deep downfield. With the focus on the running game, the Titans' receivers will see a lot of single coverage which could lead to big plays. Also, with bigger wideouts like Justin Gage on the roster, Collins' ability to put a nice touch and accuracy on fades and other short goal-line type routes should help an offense that isn't particularly good in the red zone.
Collins can be mistake-prone, but his veteran presence should pay dividends. Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger should also be able to give Collins more freedom to get out of bad play based on his pre-snap reads, and while I am certainly not ready to label Young a bust -- hard to do with the intangibles he has -- Collins is the guy who gives Tennessee the better chance to win.

    yes, it's true

in a Heimerdinger style attack (between the two of them) Collins may be better suited to run it

however, if a WR can't catch a cold naked in a blizzard, it won't matter who's under center

I agree. Looking back to Vince's rookie season when Collins started the first 4 games, we all called for Vince - and rightfully so. However, the defense of 2006 and this year are night and day. Kerry, I believe, will be much more effective "managing" the game, where Vince has that "nothing to lose" mentality and thrives in it. Unfortunately for him, our defense is so good now, we DO have something to lose making the talents (and lack thereof) he possesses a liability in the current structure of our team.

Pretty much, Collins might hit them in the hands but the result will still be the same.
