  1. First off, you'd be giving these guys a lot more money than you think. They all know how much they can make on the open market now and none of them are going to pass up that chance for a small offer. Even the borderline guys think they are going to put up 1 big season in a contract year and hit their payday.

Secondly, you're going to end up giving marginal players much more money than they deserve to get. And that's a great way to screw up your cap...

If it's a question of signing proven starters a year early, I'm all for that. But marginal starters and backups shouldn't be given big extensions early.

Starkiller, it would help if we could have confidence in our current general manager to draft good players. We didn't get much from last years draft in part of course because of the injuries to ford and johnson but our contributions at o-line wr, cb and rb were few and far between. We didn't draft a TE at all last year and what if we don't draft one this year?

Still no long term deal with roos, stewart, haynesworth. So what is the plan lose stewart, scaife, fuller, r williams and haynesworth next year and franchise roos? Yeah that will work...

Roos, Stewart and Haynesworth long-term deals should be priority one the day after the draft. That gives Reinfeldt over 2 1/2 months to get a deal in place for Albert to avoid paying the franchise tag money. He can stretch the negotiations for Stewart and Roos into August but both need to be done before the start of the regular season.

Why does it take so long to work out a contract?

Agent: We want $40 million over 7 years with 16 signing bonus.

GM: We will give you $33million over 7 years with 10 signing bonus.

    Agent $38 million, 14 signing

    GM: $35 million, 12 signing

Agent: Make it $37.5 million and we got a deal.

    GM: Done

    Simple.

  5. Ahhh... if only...

  6. You can hardly judge a GM after 1 year. Plus, we don't know he's making the draft picks over Fisher.

So? Last year we already had 3 veteran TEs. This year we do as well. There's no big need to draft a TE early.

Training camp is still months away. They usually don't sign players to extension this early in the offseason. There's no reason to worry about it for now.

Starkiller i'm not bashing anybody for not taking a TE i'm bashing the idea of not keeping any of them after they didn't draft any. Hartsock comes out looking like a genius after getting picked up for nothing last year and playing decent for us he got a $2.25M deal.

Gunny your scenario is absolutely correct.

Problem is when an agent asks for $7M a year we counter by offering only $3M. We are so far off the agent just throws up his hands and waits for free agency. In many of these cases the top offer we make is only half or not even half what the player gets in the open market.

We can remember odom's agent saying it will be very hard for odom to stay a titan? That's because we didn't offer him anything worth bothering with. If this trend continues players won't even bother to negotiate new deals and just go straight to free agency. Roos' agent doesn't even want to play this game he wants a deal now a year ahead of time.

If only. GMs also have to consider language of the contract, which is what held up Pac's contract as a rookie, how to structure everything, performance bonuses, and other things. Most importantly, there is no magic way to gauge players. I'm sure the conversation with Odom's agent went like this:

Agent: He had 8 sacks last year………

GM: and he played next to Haynesworth……….

Agent: 8 sacks is a lot.

GM: He had two against the Colts back-ups in the last game.

Agent: Regardless, he’s a great young DE, and that comes at a preminium. Look at the Giants. 5 years, 35 million, 15 mil guaranteed.

    GM: (Laughs).

Agent: Fine, we’ll go somewhere else. Someone will give us that much.
