i was readin this article from espn talkin bout our sucess in drafting wr's....its ....its....wow...

17 WRs drafted by Tennesse (since '97) and only one probowler in mason.

check out the article - http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcsouth/0-8-131/Breaking-down-the-AFC-South-s-approach-to-WRs.html

"the Titans spent high picks on other positions while managing to develop only one Pro Bowler, Derrick Mason, out of 17 drafted wideouts."

    "Tennessee:
Receivers drafted: 17 (Second in NFL)
    Average overall pick: 121.1 (15th)
    Average round: 4.06
    Average draft value pick: 86th
    First-rounders: 1
    Passing offense since 1997: 17th
Philosophical summation: The Titans haven't spent a first-rounder on a receiver since they passed on Randy Moss for Kevin Dyson in 1998. They've thrown a lot of mid- and late-round picks at the position and hope to make things work with willing blockers in a run-first offense that has not consistently stretched the field on the outside under Jeff Fisher. They won't usually play kids who don't know the entire offense early on and like to talk about how they don't need an All-Pro caliber No. 1 guy to succeed. "

so true...after idn trying for how many sb's ..the time we got the closest was actually when we did have a probowler....we need to try harder to get good wr's....

All the more reason to pay keep any WR we have who is worth a damn.

Also all the more reason to use the free agent market to bolster that position.

We have been pretty good at drafting every other position.

Mason made the pro bowl only as a return man if memory serves me right. So we really haven't had a pro bowl receiver since ever.

WRs are notoriously risky draft picks - especially 1st rounders... on average the highest failure rate of any 1st rd picks. Unfortunately we've really missed badly on WRs, and while I generally agree with our philosophy on the position there is a huge difference between an All-Pro, some solid receivers, and the group we've had. We don't NEED a "#1", but we need more than 1 guy who can run a route and/or catch a ball. 2-3 guys who can do both would be nice for a change.

And yes, that's the 1 position I think you have to be aggressive with in FA. We should go after Holt now that he's met with JAX.

    we either:

    A) Do not have adeqate coaching staff (WR coaches)
    B) Do not have good scouting when it comes to WR's
    C) We draft too late, too often resulting in the inevitable
    D) All of the above.

the average 4th rounder to probowl rate has to be pretty damn small... maybe 10% at the most

problem isnt the WRs we draft arent pro bowlers, its that they usually turn out to be tottaly worthless

I think WR's drafted in later rounds arent given enough shots, thats why most of them dont make it, 1st rounder WR's are looked at as great players and are giving more shots to do something, but a lot of the 1st rounders are bust too.

Look at Justin Gage a 5th round pick by the Bears, and giving a shot he is the Titans Starter. i say just let them play! let Hawkins on the field a lot next season and give him a shot. sometimes you have to throw people under the bus to get them to do something.
