So I got a chance to play Super Stardust HD and WipeOut HD in 3D with the 3D TV and the new update on both games that allows it to be played in 3D. I was a little skeptical about it all and it is actually quiet impressive given that both games just needed an update for it to be 3D enabled. WipeOut HD looks as good as it ever does, but it's 3D is noticeably better then Super Stardust HD imo (though when the asteroids falls from the front of the screen and the 'dust' after an explosion happens it is really cool). It's quite a gimmick and probably won't catch on in mainstream, but it does give an interesting take in gaming.
I wouldn't call it a gimmick just yet. Game developers are always trying to create immersive worlds for their games and 3D has the potential to take it to the next level. If it's something that can be fully featured in block buster games just like it was in the Avatar movie, it could end up being a unique experience. We'll just have to wait until KZ3 gets released to know for sure whether it's worth it or not.
Killzone 3D has been impressive according to those who've seen it, but very few people have a 3D tv and who knows if 3D TVs will catch on.
As far as I understand, you don't actually need a 3D TV to experience 3D. All you need is a TV with at least 120hz and something that can process the 3D signal - the PS3 is able to do this thanks to the latest firmware update or so it seems. Naturally, a 3D TV does the whole processing by itself.
I'm really hoping 3D doesn't catch on. I hate watching movies in 3D and I'll be damned if I have to watch TV or play videogames in 3D.
