Franchise tag is $5.962 for TEs. I think I could deal with a 1yr/5.962M deal. Cook has complained about not wanting to be on this team, but that's because we weren't utilizing him. However, his blocking is probably the worst by any TEs in the NFL. His drops are drive killers. I'd rather have Cook in there than Stevens & Thompson, plus we have the money... so why not. If he's demanding a big contract (anything over $5Mil) don't even waste our time and let him go.
Joseph Fauria from UCLA is a guy I wouldn't mind taking a late round flyer on if we don't bring back Cook. He's a little raw blocking wise (but hey that's what we're paying Stevens for) but he's really athletic for his size and would be a great red zone target. I caught a couple UCLA games and the coaches/announcers were talking this guy up big time and I think he scored a TD in both games I watched.
Because that's a **** ton to pay for a backup player... that's what you would pay a solid starting TE, not a backup mediocre TE. Aaron Hernandez made $3.29mil this year. He will make $4mil in 2013. Basically we're paying Stevens as if he's Hernandez and Griffin as if he's Polamalu. WE. ARE. TITANS!
I think Stevens is slightly overpaid, but he is an integral part of our run game. His base salary this year jumps from $1m to $2.5m and jumps again next year. In different circumstances, his roster spot may be in jeopardy. In this off-season he is a stone cold lock.
Uh-oh would cost half as much. Just as good as a blocker and a better receiver. Somehow Craig got paid.
