A good article from Paul Kuharsky on transitioning defensive fronts:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/tennessee-titans/post/_/id/7265/altered-fronts-dont-need-years-to-work

    To summarize:
    • Uses example of 2010 Texans and 2012 Colts as teams who transitioned to a 3-4 and had immediate success
    • Move to a two gap 3-4 like the Steelers use could take longer but the Titans will be going with a one gap scheme similar to what Wade Philips has used
    • Titans defense will seek to create confusion about who is rushing and from where
    • On Jurrell Casey: They will not use him to occupy two blockers to free up LBs -- Also say Casey will get more one-on-one situations in the new scheme
    • "Whisenhunt said schematically the 2013 Titans ran hundreds of plays in the exact same scheme that will now be their base. "
    • Jeff Fisher said the change is not as hard as some speculate
    • Wade Philips talked about different types of NTs he had over the years and different ways they were used
    • The Titans have helped the transition with the players added in FA and the draft

The 3-4 can be a great defense but it also can fail much worse than the 4-3, particularly if you struggle to control the trenches with less weight down there. 3-4 is a much more boom or bust type of defense, so that's what has me worried. It could be 2012 all over again.

Why would he not use the Browns as an example (as I have done on countless occasions now)?

After all, they switched to a 3-4 with Ray Horton at DC, so it is the most logical comparison to make.

I just love how every negative Nancy (TWW2) uses the excuse "new scheme" for why we'll suck this year. Logical... As if our schemes in the past have been great. When you switch from a garbage scheme to a good scheme you don't get worse.

Never will this D be 2012 bad. Seriously. The attack style is the best way to play D. Even if we only get it right half the time, we're going to make some noise with Ray Horton calling the shots.

Jerry Grays bend but don't break style sucks! 6+6=12. 12-yards is more than enough for a 1st down. Jerry Gray is a retard. He can not add apparently.

The difference between us and the Texans/Colts, is that they had a much more talented front 7 than we do. Philips will certainly help, and so will Ayers, but the questions are justified.

Gray's defence wasn't a bend but don't break, it was a bend and then break.

I just hope with four linebackers that we will actually be able to tackle someone on the perimeter.

IDK about "Never" but right now there is too much talent on the field and on the sideline for it to be that bad this year. The defense may be short on superstar talent but it does not have any major weaknesses like it did in 2012.
