Titans defensive end Ropati Pitoitua had three screws placed in his right hand following surgery on Monday and expects to be fitted with a cast on Wednesday.

It’s a tough blow for a player who has been penciled into a starting role, but if anyone should be able to deal with the problem, it’s Pitoitua. He said he broke a different bone in the right hand when he played for Kansas City in 2011, and played with a cast on his hand for at least one game.

“I’ve done it before, so I know how to work with it,” Pitoitua said. “For a defensive line, it’s very important (to be able to use both hands). It’s going to make the job a little harder, but you’ve got to work with what you have.”

Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray acknowledged that Pitoitua will be affected by the cast, but that he would have to find a way to be effective.

“That’s where (defensive line coaches Tracy Rocker and Keith Millard) are going to come in, and have to do a really good job of teaching him how to play knock ‘em back,” Gray said. “That’s the biggest thing we’re trying to do, keep those linebackers clean. So between (Akeem Ayers, Moise Fokou and Zach Brown), you’ve got guys to go get that running back down.”
