Gooden was obviously picked up for his sheer athleticism and upside as someone stated earlier on here. He may never be a TOP LB in the league, but they don't need him to be if other guys step up and contribute and the depth is good. They clearly are going for speedy guys to blitz and cover. If the DL can collapse the pocket and get at the QB, god help opposing offenses, but we all know that is a big IF!

Gooden reminds me a lot of Keith Bulluck when he was drafted. Real talented but real raw.

Zack Brown looks like he could be the best LB in the NFL, he's already the most talented arguably

he primarily plays wider than the play. However, i dont find that as a problem when watching film. its consistent in pretty much all of his games. Hes not playing the run as a MLB, hes playing it as a WLB and normally playing contain. He normally doesnt attack the point where the RB is going to run because hes not in place to. I see him take on a block whereever he is at though. He does good at making sure the run doesnt pop to the outside.

I could be wrong, but I watch him as a team player. not as a star with massive stats because he tries to play the gaps that arnt really his. I think this was basically the scheme and he didnt try to over think it and just plays contain mostly. I dont find a problem with this because normally when the run did go his way, he would hustle to be in on the play or try to catch the runner from behind.

His man coverage is better than his zone. He plays too much off the qbs eyes in zone and tries to be the athletic one covering everyone that comes into his area. that can be a good thing or a bad thing. in some ways it makes him an easy target because you know in zone, hes going to get excited and end up out of place.

i dont think its a terrible idea that we took him as a project. Hes got athletic ability that cant be taught, and our LBs of late have turned out well in the pros onces they got with our coaches. They might be able to create another gem in this one.

I dont think hes a starter in any way. But he could come in on certain packages and makes some interesting looks happen. Top Qbs will eat him alive right now.

Everyone getting excited about this season just scares me. Every time that happens, KNOCK ON WOOD, we get decimated by injuries.

I think Gooden was worth a shot because he fits a role for us and he is so fast and athletic but we have busted in the past with fast athletic linebackers before in Keglar and Mcgrath. He was not the same caliber player at Mizzu that Bulluck was at Syracuse.

Linebacker is a position that requires instincts and the ability to read quickly what is happening in front of you and if a player does not have that all the speed in the world won't help. Brandon spikes is a slower than average linebacker but he has great instincts. Tulloch is short and not particularly fast but he has had a fine career because he reacts quickly to plays.

The Saints drafted a guy named Stanley Arnoux the same year we drafted Mcgrath and he was, is a very fast athletic linebacker who didn't amount to anything. He is still a free agent.

    Gooden vs Georgia..

Bad start, misses the hole on a running play making a tackle from behind 10 yards past the line and while lined up tight gets beat down the field by the TE. I believe the play came back on a penalty.

After that poor start he was solid and played the run well.
