I will say that seeing the NE players live lined up against us their line/lb's looked huge next to ours.

Size definitely plays a part, but really its about talent.... It always has been.

We've been playing with our D's weights for as long as I can remember, its important to find your ideal playing weight off course, which is especially true as you become older. Its often that your weight changes to match the position/age you are with respect to the system/scheme of the D.

Now thats all good and dandy, however, like I said its about talent and play-making abilities much more though...

    ---

However, as the NFL changes, your seeing differences in positions....

For example, these little stature RBs (i.e. Ray, MJD, etc...), they get 'lost' behind the bigger O-lines and are extremely effective. Also, they are very hard to tackle b/c their center of gravity is so low.

Or for example bigger DE's (as you are saying) are having more success now. When you look at the elite 4-3 DEs like J'Pep, Mario, JPP, Allen, Dunlap etc... they are all (i think) 6'6+ (tall and ranging) and also heavier at 270+ or 280+.

Sure all those guys listed are really good, but they also ALL have incredible talent and physical skills to go along with that size. And you can't exactly tell me players like Dwight, Osi, and Elvis aren't great 4-3 DE's despite their size...

Talent and skill come first before size and i think always will...

Muscle is more dense than fat. Ayers and McCarthy will not look like a typical person of that weight walking down the street.

The Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls in the 1990s with a tiny defence. That was a time power running backs and huge OL were all the rage in the NFL. Dexter Coakley, on of their starting OLB, was 5'10" and weighed 225 lbs.

When the Broncos won their 2 Super Bowls they had one of the smallest front sevens in the league and the smallest OL. The 49ers were never close to having a big defence for any of their Super Bowls. The Bucs, Colts and Giants (for their last 2 Super Bowls) have all won Super Bowls with small defences.
