Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky
I just read a superb, informative article by Pablo S. Torre in this week's Sports Illustrated about how professional athletes manage to go broke, and it included this alarming NFL nugget:

By the time they have been retired for two years, 78% of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress because of joblessness or divorce.

One of the things Torre looks at in the story is the 400 championship rings pawned by anonymous athletes to championship-rings.net.

Some of the rings on sale there, however, may not symbolize an athlete who's hit hard times. The older rings could well have belonged to athletes who are deceased could be being sold by their families -- who may have fallen on hard times, or may simply be unsentimental.

I wondered if I'd find any ties to the AFC South there and I came across four rings connected to the division. Two are salesman's samples: a 1958 Baltimore Colts championship ring priced at $4,995 and a 1970 Colts Super Bowl V Champion ring that's out of stock.

The other two that could have come from players:

A 1960 Houston Oilers AFL Championship ring listed at $4,995.

A 1961 Houston Oilers AFL Championship ring that's rated as "extremely rare" and is out of stock.

i read that article as well...it is sad that players cant/wont/dont know how to manage all that cash. they all talk about setting up their families for life...but they cant hold on to it for more then a couple years.

I think it's about miscalculating all the expenses.

I'm sure it's nice to get that first fat contract and buy a 2-3 million dollar home (TN prices)... but then you have 700 monthly electric bills. And your gonna have every possible tv channel in existance right? There's another 200-300 a month, considering how many dvr boxes one might buy. Etc, Etc, Etc.

Then you buy a boat, 4 cars, etc. And then they need repairs and maintenance.

And then your career is over, and the advertising revenue drastically slows, and if you are unprepared, or now physically (possibly mentally) unable to work a normal job....

Of course, I don't personally know any NFL players very well. So this is all my speculation.

I just remember wisdom my father passed to me: "The more things you own, the more things you should expect will break."

These guys own 2 houses minimum, usually too- excluding vacation houses. Property taxes and utility bills alone would be insane. Then you know they have all new furnishings.

...and usually an agent robbing them.

I agree with you. Plus most are going to spend money on family as well.

I just think that a lot of people that fall into money fast make the mistake of over-purchasing without regarding the expenses to maintain those purchases.
