Because they know and have history with the child and simple things that seem like infections might actually be larger issue that some random goon may not know about.

I know and respect what you are saying but seriosuly think about what are saying ... you would save a buck over a better knowledge of your daughters possible condition.

I am only this adimit about this situation because my daughter has reflux which was mis diagnosed due to a simple lack on knowledge. Now she is better but it could have gotten a lot worst.

    Food for thought

one of your comments said that your cost for antibiotics was more because you were older ... but does that make sense? It is the same stuff ...

In the US we get to pay the development and manufacturing cost of the drugs plus profit for the pharmacuticals, the rest of the developed world gets to pay the manufacturing cost plus profit while the third world gets the drugs on a "what their market can bear" basis. Typically heavily subsdized by the US and other developed nations.

Arrow, I think I have confused you (or at least offended you!!)

In Australia I use the family doctor I have seen since I was a child and I trust inherently. I agree - I wouldn't trust my child's (or my own) well being to someone I didn't have faith in. I would never go to a "high-school grad". And I wasn't contemplating getting medical advice from someone from Walgreen's.

And I am not complaining at all about the quality of health care. The doctors my family have seen have been fine both here and in Australia. I don't understand the use of pediatricians (one specialist trained professional) for issues that I would normally consult a general practitioner (another trained professional) for, but chalk that up to cultural difference if you will

My gripe is with the cost of health-care (and particularly the cost for those that can't afford private health insurance).

The cost differential I was referring to when visiting the doctor was on the basis of having NO private health insurance. Our national medicare fund subsidises visits to the doctor to this extent, so all citizens are entitled to health care regardless of financial standing.

The other issue I complained about was the cost of medication. I'm not sure if Australian medicine is that heavily subsidised by the Government or if Australia is more open to importation of pharmeceuticals, but again, I can't understand how low income earners who can't afford private health insurance get by.

Sorry if I confused or offended you.

I was only referring to the cost of a visit to the doctor. The cost of medication is the same. Gunny mentioned that he paid twice as much as I did to go to the doctor, but I responded by saying that there was a difference between the cost of a visit for me and my children at our family doctor.

Sorry again if I caused any confusion.

  7. They simply avoid going to the doctor at all cost (no pun intended).

not at all. Sometimes when I try to make my point it comes across agressive. That is not my intent in anyway. I was just trying to put out my point. I think in certain views you have a very valid point. I just have a unique take on the matter because of my daughter.

A friend of my family went to Kaiser 3 times complaining of chest pain only to be sent home and it brushed off by a guy that was just a basic Dr. Before he could make it back the 4th time (in the same night granted) he passed. To me I would rather be safe the sorry especially when it comes to family or freinds. I hope what I have said has not been offensive. Just take it with a grain of salt ... what do I know anyways I am just an accountant :))

Seems like complaining about outrageous medical bills is common. I go to the ER for 30 minutes a few years ago, they actually did the wrong thing to me, and here's your $1200 bill. I'd like to know how it could come close to that much. Everybody I know of complains about high bills or high insurance costs.

But I wouldn't know if our system is really screwed up, don't know much about anyone else's system. Some say Canada has great health care for everyone, but at the expense of really high taxes. That's basically where my knowledge ends....so I just keep paying my health insurance premium monthly and life goes on as normal :greedy:

One of the best deals about being in the military. FREE medical. Almost Free medical for family. At the same time though...the doctors are not always the best and they have LOTS of customers. If you have to make an appointment for something like a Flu, it can take a while to get seen. I also try to avoid the doctor like the plague.

On a side note, I am going through a series of Anthrax shots so I will be immune to it. These suckers hurt like no other.....!!!!
