My dearest Elizabeth,

I hope the day finds you well. As I write these words it is the evening of the 22nd in the 9th month of the year 2015.

Two days ago we found defeat at the hands of a Union regiment in the Yankee town of Cleveland. They had a youthful commander named Johnathan Manziel leading them on the field of battle. The men and I felt like we could win the day but the Brown units from Cleveland proved to be more than we could ever hope to overcome.

Time and time again our front lines were broken. The Brown Regiment sent their cavalry through our lines again and again. My dear Elizabeth I feared I might never see the sun set on that day.

I am joyous to report that I escaped the skirmish without significant harm and we retreated down through Kentucky and back to the safety of Fort Nashville.

The battle was not without its losses I am afraid. Sergeant Kendall Wright was removed from the field of battle but we hope he can return to his unit before the snows begin to fall.

I am saddened to report that Private Coty Sensabaugh will never be the same. He was beaten severely during the events of the battle on multiple occasions. We pray that he can be released to return home to his family before the leaves turn and fall from the trees. I fear that the internal wounds that Private Sensabaugh suffered will surely follow him to the grave.

I am afraid I must end our correspondence with the most unfortunate news.

Scouts have returned and reported that a Union regiment from Indianapolis will reach the walls of Nashville by twelve noon this coming Lord's Day.

They are led by the Union General Andrew Luck and he has beaten this Nashville regiment on multiple occasions in previous years before my arrival. I want to believe that I can turn the tide of this battle in favor of my fellow Tennesseans but I just do not know my dear Elizabeth. We are surely facing the greatest challenge thus far of this young season.

Please give my best to your father and mother. Perhaps when this awful war has concluded I can return to the shores of our beloved island and start a small sugar plantation.

I dream of it every night my love. When we can be together again and stroll along the rows of pineapple plants. I swore that I would return and marry you when God himself ends this senseless bloodshed. I will fulfill my promise to you Elizabeth, I will endure.
