If they wait the 3 years and he breaks into the top 5 of QB's...he will sign for $30mil/year...and he won't even be the highest paid QB at that time. Expect Rodgers or Ryan to break the $30mil/yr mark before Mariota sniffs an extension!

Well if you just look at the last 10 or so top QB transactions you see it gets bumped up a few mil every year.. would save us some money in the long run to extend him sooner rather than later

Let's say you sign him to an extension today so we pay him $25mil a year for the next 10years (avg). He gets $250mil. Let's say they wait 3 years and spend (cap money) $14.3 for 2017 and 2018 and then exclusive rights him at $25mil. 25+14.3=39.3 and then sign him to a 7 year contract worth $30mil/yr. 210+39.3=249.3. Roughly the same. I think the calculus is how far up the ladder he climbs...10th best qb, 5th best...vs how much are these QB salaries gonna get bumped up. One would expect Rodgers and Ryan will get MORE than Stafford. Anyway you slice it, this is gonna get expensive.

2 reasons you don't extend him asap is injury concerns and you don't know how good he's going to be plus that will be a huge amount of guaranteed money so, might want to know exactly what they are getting by see him play another year or two...or three.

Perhaps the best of both worlds is to see what he does this year and if worth it, sign him before any of the other huge names sign extensions and then sign him to a 10yr deal (lock in our 'rate' so to speak) with guaranteed money broken down over different groups of years to protect the team against catastrophic injury or retirement.

Meanwhile, we could have invested a chunk of that unused cap space on players helping us the last year or two and leading up to when we are gonna pay Mariota.

I can't help but wonder how long Rodgers is in this for. He's already rich with discount double check money to boot. He knows how bad the game is for his brain, he went to Berkeley, the smart hippie idiot capital of the planet. He has a Bob Marley tatoo, so he probably wants to spend some time as a weird poser. He has said himself that he is on the downhill side of his career last year. He is obviously at least bi because he dropped Olivia Munn, does he really want to be in the spotlight forever? Things to consider at bedtime.

True, but if he keeps doing what he's been doing, we will be in the same position as Detroit. We will have no choice but to pay him close to top dollar or go back to not having a QB.

if youre even close to whats considered "good", youre cashing in big time

Stafford is over paid byut I say that everytime a new deal gets announced

fact is hes got 25 4th quarter comebacks, besides Brady thats right in line with the best of them still playing today
