The fact of the matter is, that pass is incomplete if they run it against air.

Sankey saw that he had nowhere to go (thanks to the Oline) and stopped short.

Should have ended with Sankey getting blown up for a loss or an incomplete pass.

That is, if Mariota didn't put it in the dirt.

Its everyone's fault. Terrible play design. Terrible execution by everyone involved. Like alot of posters have said so far this wasn't the type of INT we should be overly concerned with. Rookie Qb having gitters on a blown up play and threw of his back foot. Learning experience for Mariota he needs those too...

Visited my dad this week and we watched the game together (he's a Falcons fan). He trash-talked a bit when I hyped up Mariota before the game and after a while I was pretty upset over the start but how Mariota finished may actually end up being a good thing. He went through all of camp being a Heisman winner, top pick, not making mistakes, media darling, etc etc etc. He comes out and turns the ball over twice and takes a sack in his first somewhat real NFL experience. Returns to the field and completes 5 passes on an 80-yard TD drive. We have the real deal I think.

Actually, that doesn't sound bad at all IMO. After the fumble I was hoping that he would come back out for the next series. Actually, given that he is a rookie and we plan to start him I would have liked to have seen him out there longer.

I was impressed with his recovery, but it is evident that he has some learning to do. But, preseason is when you want to learn these lessons.

Was it a regular play or a screen?

Its pretty clear that 67 didnt set up his block and get to where he needed to be. If you dont see that, then THAT is being blind. Sankey, as bad as he is, saw it and did the only thing he could and he sat down in a spot, waiting for the 67 to be where he should have been. It was a bad decision by Mariota and its not that big of a deal.

    Multiple things went wrong.

Blaming it all on Sankey, is just nuts. Not to mention incorrect.

Im definitely not an NFL employee but im pretty sure it was a screen. Even watching Matiota backpeddle, it had to be a screen.

There you go. That was the problem. This team can't do screens.

Maybe when we get a real OL. We need them to step up or were in for a long season again.

I too throw some blame at the linemen. Of course it was Levitre and Schwenke involved.

The timing just looked jacked up from the beginning. Either Mariota threw it early or the linemen didn't release in time.

The LB made a pretty nice play too.

As far as the fumble is concerned, it didn't even look like the d-lineman got his hand on it to me. Just slipped out of Mariota's hand. A little concerning considering he fumbled 27 times in 41 games at Oregon.
