Some people write like they have not seen much football in their lives. Believe it or not there are guys who are great return men who can't do much else. That's why we call it special teams because returning kicks and punts are a specialty.

Does that mean he can't be a productive WR? Of course not but being a good kick returner has never automatically meant you can do anything else so stop acting like it can.

Yeah he had some nice numbers as a receiver in college but so did a lot of bums we have had come through. Filani had great numbers and where is he?

Give him a chance sure but predicting success just because he is fast and athletic is jumping the gun.

Was Dante Hall a great WR? How about Mel gray? Billy white shoes Johnson? 3 of the best return men ever.

And of course as usual some poster had to bring up another white guy to compare him with.

So Mariani has been compared to a 6'5 guy in Drew Bennett and a 5'10 guy in Welker. What might be wrong with that?

Is it possible to dig just a little deeper than color?

How can they all(Including Mariani) get more opportunities? It is impossible. They are competing with each other for playing time so somebody needs to ride pine.

By definition, they all could easily get more opportunities, but I'm fine with Mariani riding the pine.

Are you having a conversation with yourself Tide?
My initial point was that Blue Gorilla assumed because Mariani was a good KR/PR guy that he was a football retard that needed to be shown, through special education, where the seams and holes were. Mariani was a pretty good WR in college and the fact he played at a small school is irrelevant. He knows how to run routes and be a WR. Does that mean he is automatically going to be good? Of course not but we have seen pure WRs, guys who couldn't PR/KR, who came from BIG schools with GREAT competition that sucked to high heaven. So maybe Mariani can be a good WR.

Mariani wasn't Devin Hester, a man without a position who now needs to learn how to be a WR. Actually Mariani was a WR who could also return in college. We know he is a darn good return guy. Maybe he can be a decent WR. He has as much chance as any other guys we have IMO. He certainly has as much chance at being a decent WR as Hawkins, a guy who played at a big school with big competition who hasn't done jack crap and can't return either. There are plenty of quality WRs in the NFL from smaller schools. Mariani obviously has good speed, good vision and he has great hands.

Jerry Rice went to Mississippi Valley State - Div 1AA
Randy Moss went to Marshall - Div 1AA when he got there

    Those guys turned out OK.

BUt what you seem to be missing that he has already proven he can be a good WR.

Last preseason he led all WR (All as in whole NFL, not just Titans) in receptions and yards. When he went to the Pro-bowl, Bellichek used him more as a WR than he did a KR/PR. And from camp reports this year he is proving himself once again.

Yeah, we didn't even use Mariani as a KOR his senior year because he was too valuable as a receiver. Because of his route-running and lateral quickness he was pretty much uncoverable for most FCS teams

Plus TO, Colston, Vincent Jackson (who we had the displeasure of hosting), Miles Austin, etc. Then you've got DII guys like N. Washington and Johny Knox and even DIII guys like Garcon. WR seems to be the one position where lower level guys can make a bigger impact in the the pros.

From what I've heard on the thread and from Twitter, Mariani performed like our number 1 receiver yesterday ..... we shall see

Belicheat played him at wideout during the probowl. Although it was clear they didn't give a **** about the game, still.

And if I remember right, he was very impressive at WR during the preseason last year.
