And the owners and the league have roughly two weeks to come up with a new agreement, or there will be no CBA.

He's one of the very best of all time. Never said he wasn't.

But, being 35 changes things. I can't rank him as #2 in the league. I just can't.

Brady, Rodgers, and Rivers all definitely played better than him this year. The drop-off was noticeable. He's still one of the best in the league... I have him in the top 5 for Christ's sake. There are younger guys who are better than him at this point in their careers though.

Take Rivers off the Chargers; Take Brady off the Pats; Take Brees off the Saints; Take Rodgers off the Packers. See what happens. All would miss the playoffs. It's the same thing with Manning. All of those teams are smart and have built their team around their QB. If only we could ever do something so wise.

I'm a firm believer in Peyton and feel that he's going to break all of Favre's records (except for most INTs).

That is not their problem. They have drafted badly, that's the problem. They have never let a great player leave since Mike Peterson, and that was a long time ago.

Paying one player a great amount of money does not cripple a team. The salary cap in '09 (last capped year) was 128 million.

Manning made appx. 14 Million. They had 114 Million dollars to spend on the rest of the team. They just flop in the draft consistently over the past few years, plus the injuries did not help.

But the idea of one player crippling an entire franchise is not based on fact.

I covet the days when Manning crashes and burns in a very recent-Favre-like, burning, hurdling, ball of failure...

There will be a new CBA at some point (I really do not see this getting done by March 4), and it will most likely include provisions for franchising players.

I kinda hope they get rid of the franchise tag in the new CBA. It's kinda pointless... if someone's about to be a free agent, being able to keep them against their will doesn't make much sense to me.

All I've seen is conflicts resulting from people getting franchised (that or teams buying more time to negotiate).

Understand, but no way will it go away IMO (maybe "famous last words" here, but I just do not see it going away).

So what does that have to do with Manning possibly being a free agent this year because he won't be bound to an agreement that won't exist?
