There are usually several serviceable DL released during camp, so we can pick up depth there as well. I do think we need to draft 1 in the first 3 rounds-wherever we can get value-along with 1 or more WR.

Last year, the #24 pick was Brandon Meriweather, who signed a 5-year deal worth just over $8M.....around $1.75M/year. I'm guessing the #24 pick this year will get around $1.9M/year.

Bryce Fisher was virtually invisible last year, and certainly appears to be on the downside of his career.

I'm not saying it's an either/or situation....if they were forced to choose, I'm sure the Titans would take a young DE with 1st round talent over a declining Bryce Fisher.

Also, keep in mind, they're not drafting just to fill a hole this year....they're looking at the next five years and beyond. If they see an opportunity to pick up a franchise-caliber DE for less than $2M/year, they'd be foolish not to do it.

(FWIW, I don't think they signed Kearse to be an every-down DE....not with his injury history. I'm guessing Jevon will be filling LaBoy's role as a pass rush specialist; the difference is, a fresh and healthy Kearse should be head-and-shoulders better than LaBoy ever was, even on his best day.)

    1. draft picks at #24 are not expensive (~2 mil).
    2. a DE at #24 would be a good value money wise for the next 4 or more years
    3. there is a good chance Kearse and KVB aren't in the picture when the draft pick is ready to get paid big bucks assuming he works out well.
    4. Ford doesn't make squat and if he turns out to be decent enough to make the roster Fisher can be let go meaning his 2 mil pays for the rook anyway.
    5. 3 mil for Kearse isn't a huge amount either and there are doubts he can be an every down player

Seriously, the guy can't distinguish a steaming dung heap from brown bread. Drafting a guy to keep him off the other team.... :spit:

One DE nobody talks much about that might be a good fit for us is Lawrence Jackson. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profile.php?pyid=55398

Similar size and speed to Merling, had a 34.5 vertical at his pro day and benches 225 31 times. 10.5 sacks last year. I'd take him over Campbell for sure and he would be a nice replacement for Odom.

I think everyone is overreacting. I think it's legitimate to consider it a bonus that you can fill a need and prevent a division rival from getting a player that you value highly. Of course it's not the main way that you make the decision, but that's not what he way saying anyway.

The gist of the article is that Roos should have as much input into who we select as Vince does because he will face the DE we pass on twice a year. Dumb as hell premise- he is desperate for material. Now that Pac will soon be gone, he will have to find some other means to cover up his serious lack of talent when it comes to sports journalism.

Well, shouldn't Roos have as much input as Vince?

My main opinion is that players opinions shouldn't matter very much. But if you're consulting Vince, I see no reason not to consult Roos about his opinions of DEs.

Yes, Kuharsky was writing about an obscure point because everyone was bored out of their minds when he wrote the article, but I don't think it's as stupid as everyone on here is arguing.

How the heck is Roos going to know what DE is the best? I could see VY having an opinion on Sweed, a guy he played with and how he might compare to the guys on the Titans as well as knowing about Sweed's work ethic and character. Roos isn't a scout and didn't play against any of the guys in this draft. None of the guys in this draft compare at all to Freeney IMO and unless that was the case I doubt Roos has any reservations about knocking any of them on their arse.
