Jones' appeal may make for badly timed missed games

Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky The story as we know it: Matt Jones has been suspended for three games by the league for a violation of its substance abuse police. He has appealed and he awaits word.

Indications are he did not hear anything tonight, which means he'll be at work in the morning and get in another week of work before a verdict. Whether he gets good news or bad in a week, he may have made a bad gamble.

The Jaguars could have lost to Cleveland as they did on Sunday without Jones. And if they cannot win back-to-back games against winless teams, at Cincinnati and at Detroit, without their leading receiver, their troubles are bigger than any of us think.

The target date should have been Jacksonville's Week 11 rematch against the AFC South leading Titans, on Nov. 16th. Being available for that game seems like it should have been paramount to me.

Now Jones faces the danger of missing that game even if his suspension is reduced.

But it's probably moot now.

The loss to Cleveland blew the Jaguars' chance to line up at 4-3, in sole possession of second place in the AFC South with a head-to-head chance to gain ground on the Titans in three weeks and make things difficult on Tennessee.

It's hard to imagine the 3-4 Jaguars catching the Titans now no matter how much, or how little, they have Jones in uniform.
