You're right. We had a top five passing offense and couldn't get it done. Even when the perennial Pro-Bowler Matt Cassel came in...

This is the one signing so far that I'm not crazy about. I can accept the ST moves since they were necessary and aren't long-term, but Cyp averaging $6.25m a year for 4 seasons just isn't good. No wonder he accepted so early, nobody was going to beat that offer.

Not sure how much of an upgrade on Searcy he will be. I guess we just need to trust J-Rob with it.

Cyprien is a solid addition. It's obvious he's a liability in pass coverage and if it's obvious to us then our front office and coaches know as well, he'll make a fine SS for us while Byard roams behind him. He's a hard hitter and can tackle, we need both on this defense. This also isn't the kind of move that eliminates us from still looking to upgrade the position, so fans of Adams shouldn't worry.

We'll get a real safety in here one of these days. Until then, we'll just have to deal with the parade of Jordan Babineaux, Bernard Pollard, Da'Norris Searcy, and Jonathan Cyprien.

So I'm guessing he'll be more of a 2 down Safety?

I really like this signing. The guy played at an elite level against the run and should play close to the line in the Kam Chancellor mold. Actually graded higher than Chancellor againt the run. Jaguars put him in coverage like an idiot but I can't see us making the same mistake. With Cyprien playing shallow and the rangy Byard ball hawking deep, this could be a very intriguing pairing IMO.

I liked Hyde. From what I've read, GB did try to re-sign him, but Hyde opted for free agency instead.

Clearly a 2 down SS I see us playing him at LB sometimes on clear passing situations ...playing with 3 safety's.

“I am excited to have Johnathan here with us,’’ Titans general manager Jon Robinson said. “Obviously there’s a lot of familiarity with him having played against him twice. I was a big fan of his back when he came out of Florida International. He’s an aggressive hitter, strong in coverage. He really battles at the point of attack, when the ball is in the air vs. those tight ends. He’s an instinctive player, good blitzer, heavy hitter. He’ll really help us in the back end...And he’s a great person, a really good family man. I am looking forward to working with him.”

    From Walter Football:

Titans sign S John Cyprien (4 years, $25 million): A Grade

Don't look now, but the Titans are a legitimate Super Bowl contender. They already had a capable quarterback, strong running game, great offensive line, and dangerous pass rush last year, but they were sorely lacking in the secondary. That is no longer the case in the wake of the John Cyprien and Logan Ryan acquisitions.

I wrote about Ryan below. I gave that a "B." I like this signing a lot more. Cyprien was 14th in my Top 100 NFL Free Agent Rankings page. He was one of the top safeties in the NFL last year, and he's only 27 (in July), so getting him for about $6 million per year seems like an incredible bargain, especially considering all of the bad contracts that have been issued this offseason.

I think this signing deserves an "A" for sure. I wouldn't have batted an eye had Cyprien obtained about $40 million over four seasons from the Titans, so $25 million over the same span is a great deal. There's no doubt that he improves Tennessee's secondary big time.
