BTW, Mariota and a lot of spread QB's get a bad rap (usually deserving) for how many passes they throw short. I found this article regarding the 2013 season which had some surprising results. They tried to chart the distance of each throw (not catch and run) for completion percentage and to see what percentage of each distance a QB threw. So what's the % of throws behind the line of scrimmage? What's the percentage of throws 0-4yds...etc. then they charted the QB's completion percentage based on throws of that distance. lastly, they rebalance everyone's completion percentage if they all threw a standard % for each distance (based on each QB's completion % for each zone). I was very surprised where Mariota came out. BTW, since this is a 2013 article, it includes Mettenberger, Manziel, Manual, Bridgewater, etc.

I don't think they have done one for this season as I couldn't find it, but I'd guess (hope) they will do one after the regular season ends but before the draft!!!

Well, to clarify a few things...

First, McShay was the only one I'm aware of that thought Locker would/could be the #1 pick...probably off a rumor one of the 'insiders' told of an anonymous NFL GM saying he was a taller, righthanded version of Steve Young. First, no one should listen to such nonsense and second, the NFL advisory comittee (coming off of Locker's BEST college season) didn't give him a 1st rnd grade (let alone the first pick in the draft). Locker never completed higher than 58% of his passes. How could he be the first pick?

I agree that Winston has a lot more holes in his game than people want to listen to. All they want to see is the good stuff...come backs and undefeated...not his actual play which is more relevant. He has sloppy footwork, at times stares down receivers, at times gets flustered if his first read isn't there. He also sometimes eliminates all of these mistakes when he plays for stretches.

As for Mariota, I'll leave you with this. First, his 10.2 yds per ATTEMPT is 2nd highest of all QB's in college football. Last I checked, he doesn't have the 3 best wr's on the planet everyone has to play 10yds off. Even with a gimmicky offense, this is impressive. Second, he did not have his best game against Stanford for sure. But even in perhaps his worst game of the season, he accounted for 340+yds of Offense, 4 TDs to 1 INT. That did include a nice 25yd TD throw (not a catch and run). Mariota, not surprisingly, like Russell Wilson, can run when needed and use his legs as weapons. Winston can do it in college but won't be a big time runner in the pros. Mariota is Colin Kap with more polish and a lot more experience against top level competition. Mariota also boasts the highest QB rating in college AND the highest QBR rating (which takes into account things like strength of defenses faced).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating we draft Mariota, just that there are a ton of positives...especially stat-wise (which you'd expect). I think the only way you get Mariota starting in the NFL next year is if you drastically change your offense (like SF did for Kap). For a more traditional offense, you might have to sit him for a year or more. Or go the Indy route and throw him in on day 1 and let him learn on the job while we struggle another season.
