Annie Wilkes vs. Max Cady vs. Sutter Cane Annie Wilkes (Misery) Max Cady (Cape Fear) Sutter Cane (In the Mouth of Madness)
I've actually never seen In the Mouth of Madness despite being a Carpenter fan. I need to rectify that soon. This is my toughest decision yet between the other two though....
I still need to see that one. Just went with the De Niro version because I figured that'd be the portrayal most here were familiar with.
Carpenter is a great filmmaker, but he has a few duds - and this is one of them. He didn't have a single great movie in the 90's..
A nice triple feature with Night of The Hunter and Thunder Road. Mitchum always nails the prototype southern bad guy. But the type the girls got all moist over...
Yeah the 90s were rough for him. I heard he did Village of the Damned as a "favor" that was supposed to result in him doing a Creature from the Black Lagoon feature. So his heart obviously wasn't in it. Then it tanked and they wouldn't let him do the Creature movie. But man he was on fire in the 70's and 80's. His version of The Thing is one of my all-time favorites.
And to a certainty, Annie Wilkes wouldn't have been able to take Mitchum's Cady. She would have been done in in about 30 seconds.
The Thing, Halloween, Escape From NY, They Live, Christine and Big Trouble in Little China. He didn't need to do any other films IMO.. I rewatched Madness recently and it's bizarre how it feels so much more like an oddball Clive Barker flick. JC should have deferred this to Stuart Gordon who did a such a good job with the Lovecraft stories..
