    Oddly enough, he wasn't based on Vlad; he was actually based on Buffalo Bill Cody. Bram Stoker knew almost nothing of Romanian history.

    It's not clear in the novel that The Count is actually Vlad. That connection is mostly via Hungarian tourist industry and Dracula movies of the 70's on..
    Vlad was an influence on the original material - but so was Elizabeth Bathory and any number of old world blood drinking types..
