I have never seen Dawn of the Dead and all that.

Hostel is a particularly gruesome, albeit terrible, horror movie.

For an older scary movie, check out "The Serpent and the Rainbow". It's a 1987 film starring Bill Pullman and directed by Wes Craven. It's set primarily in Haiti and New York City. The film's about voodoo and other black magic. It was VERY loosely based on real events.

It does have some cheesy 1987 effects that might make you laugh more than frighten you, but not throughout the film, only in a part or two. The concept of the movie is rather frightening, which adds a lot.
