I really think that Donta Hightower is the safest pick in the draft. He has tremendous instincts. He is very physical and brings an attitude to his tackles. He can go sideline to sideline and is a very good blitzer.

I know that with McCarthy and Ayers drafted last yr that we won't draft him, but I think he could have a Ray Lewis type career.

I would love for us to go to a 5-2 look as our base defense

Ayers Jones Casey Klug Morgan as the DL and then McCarthy and Hightower as the Lbers. A very athletic front.

You may be right. I feel kinda the same about Courtney Upshaw, just a very solid football player with great instincts. Both don't wow you physically, however they know the game.

Don't know if you've realized that our FO seems to be targeting "football players". Meaning guys who may not fly off the board like physical freaks, they may be slower and less athletic but they have heart, great character and just know how to play football well (Verner, Ayers, Klug, Morgan, Casey, McCarthy) come to mind.

DeCastro is a very safe pick as well, he'll be some teams starting guard for quite awhile.

Great point about the FO targeting ballers. Those guys all produced in college but didn't show out at the combine.

I like Upshaw as well. I just get the feeling that most people think he will get drafted top 20 while very few think Hightower will. Hightower is slotted way lower than he should be on most of the top 100 IMO.

Hightower really impressed me in the combine. His 40 time was a lot faster than I thought. Honestly any of the three Alabama players, Hightown, Upshaw, or Barron would be a great pick up for us.

I like him but I wonder if he'll fall to the 2nd round? We can't afford to go LB in the 1st, too many other needs.

I don't see any chance he falls to the 2nd. I have friends who played against Hightower in high school, actually.

I think the guy from Cal is the best LB in the draft. Admittedly I'm basing a lot of that off of his great performance at the combine, but I listened to him talk on ESPN yesterday. Very intelligent guy.

If Hightower did fall to the 2nd, I'd trade up and take him. No doubt.

Hightower won't fall past the Steelers.

Kuechly might be the safest pick. The Cal guy is 5'11", so that probably hurts a bit. At the least, I bet he could be one heck of a ST player.

I was thinking the same thing. After he just blew up the combine I go back and see that he won the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Why does he get such little pub? This guy is gonna end up in the first round and perhaps by us.

The whole drafting of Ayers still confuses the hell out of me. He plays around 255 and ran a 4.8 at the combine, to me this guy is too big and slow to play effectively in coverage but that's exactly how the Titans play him. I've always seen him as more of a James Harrison type of player so I just don't get why he's playing OLB in a 4-3.

So when we hear that Ayers is going to be rushing the passer more, and how we hire a pass rush specialist, to me, that says that if he can get to 260 he could play a full time DE. With a good lifting program in the off season he can get much stronger and get up to 260 I'd imagine. If this is the case we'd need a new OLB so a guy like Mychal Kendricks could easily play outside.

In my opinion, Vinny Curry may be the safest pick of the early rounds. When we consider drafting a player we usually take a few things into account: physical measurables, college production, and motor. Curry has checked out physically, he may not be the biggest, strongest, or fastest DE, but his measurables are definitely adequate for his position. Now he played against inferior competition while at Marshall, but he dominated that competition, you see for yourself by looking at his college stats and game tape. Now what I love about Curry is that he has a great motor and desire. He never gives up on plays and is always looking to cause a turnover and make a play. He never stops or gives up, and I think that relentless quality is his strongest feature.

That being said, I do not believe he is worth taking with the 20th overall pick. To me he is a late first/early second round pick, and unfortunately he will most likely be picked before our second round selection. This is why I am a proponent of trading back in the first, or trading up in the second and selecting a guy like Curry or Fletcher Cox (another safe pick who is vastly underrated and will consequently most likely be picked in the late first).

That's my take on this situation, I hate picking at 20 because the "elite talents" will be long gone, but at the same time we can't necessarily draft a "steal" unless one of said "elite talents" falls to us. I almost wish we were either picking earlier or later, 20 is just kind of in limbo. I trust Webster, Munch, and the rest of the Titan FO to make the most of the situation and I can't wait for free agency and the draft to see what direction we choose to go.
