    Mmmmm......Halo Theology talk.

There was nothing in the history about Pickled Midget's uncanny ability to be fragged at any given moment.

just a thought ... maybe the adaptive AI made it so intriguing
maybe it was the assortment of vehicles you could pilot
the soundtrack was nice, yes ?
maybe the story brought out the sci-fi geek in everyone
the LAN multiplayer in Combat Evolved was hot - i haven't seen it matched
personally, I think some of the enemies are goofy
... but the Grunts do give me a chuckle sometimes
Master Chief, imo, is one of the coolest player characters
the concept of a Ring-World is pretty neat
the graphics ,at the time, were stellar
    etc. etc.
I'm sure different people have different reasons

regardless of if they match anyone's, it's hard to deny it's a big seller

I'm more of a casual gamer now, but grew up playing a lot and really just haven't played as much in the last few years (don't have a next gen system....yet). FPS is probably my favorite genre, and I've played all those games you listed. Doom was the original....well not really, but it was the first one to make a big splash. It's great, but games can get better when systems get better. That game did set the bar, and I've played it recently and still loved it. The new Doom game was really good, but not as good as Halo 1 or 2 to me.

Quake, never thought it was that great. Same for Unreal. Keep in ind I've never played a game on-line.

Golden Eye was awesome, but one advantage for Halo is it's a series, not a one hit wonder.

Halo took the genre to new heights. I don't think the single player is at all pedestrian, as that's all I've ever played in the game. The story, for a FPS, is very good. I never expected a RPG type epic tale, but what other great FPS's have better or even equal stories to Halo? Half Life is all I can think of. Most of them don't even have a story.

The only real complaint is the ending for #2 could have been more, but that's minor complaint for me. The controls, graphics, music, levels, well pretty much everything was excellent to me. Now maybe I'm a bit biased to it because I love FPS's, and maybe that's the case with most other people. I haven't played Gears yet, and maybe that can rival it.

I will say Metroid Prime (the 1st one), is another great FPS, but a notch below Halo to me. Same for Half-Life 2, and it's probably the closest thing to Halo for me....but I can't say I've ever played a better FPS.

You have yet to play Gears of War right ?
not quite as "cool' a story, but more advanced technique
and graphics to kill for (get a friggin 360 already)

I thought Half-Life 2 was awesome, the Orange Box should be excellent too

Metroid Prime 3 - Corrupton got great reviews, but not quite Halo league

Resistance (ps3) was decent .... hmmm..... i dunno = not Halo

I personally think you cannot pick one as the best FPS ever. I have been playing FPS since Castle Wolfenstein. I thought Half Life [original] was like Halloween [first movie]...the first of its kind to actually make me tense as heck from what was around the next corner.

Halo was one of the first FPS games to fully open the environment for exploration and made squad-based action and teamplay a focus, rather than the bunny hopping madness of Team Fortress and most other shooters.

However, the military shooters have a different feel and play to me than the scifi games. I like the MOH series of games just for their storylines and the intensity of them. I also like the BF series for online play. I am playing one now, Red Orchestra, that is very interesting in that you don't have the luxury of player tags to know if they guy on the horizon running across the snow is friend or foe. Its pretty cool.

Halo 3 is bound to be a winner. Quake Wars is just more of the same. MOH Airborne is very cool as well. Guess its all a matter of what gets you going.
