Gray: Titans may alternate starters at CB

The Titans have been weighing the pros and cons of cornerbacks Alterraun Verner and Tommie Campbell all offseason, trying to decide which one should be the regular starter.

On Tuesday, defensive coordinator Jerry Gray left open the possibility of alternating them based on matchups.

Verner will start the preseason finale against the Vikings on Thursday. It will be his third start. As for which player will start the regular season opener against the Steelers on Sept. 8, Gray said no decision has been reached.

“Vern has some strengths in one area, and Tommie has some strengths in another,” Gray said. “So we may end up using both of those guys during the season.”

Verner has spent most of his career playing zone, but the Titans are putting an emphasis on more physical man-to-man coverage. Because of his size, the 6-foot-3, 198-pound Campbell is arguably better equipped for that style than Verner (5-10, 186).

Gray also made mention of his previous stint with the Titans when cornerbacks Dainon Sidney and Michael Booker alternated.

“Come Pittsburgh week, we know we have to make a decision,” Gray said. “But we’re going to look at Pittsburgh’s roster and see which guy fits that week, and we may end up using both guys during the course of the season because one guy is stronger on one area, and the other guy is stronger in the other.”
