*Update* It has been brought to our attention that this review score from Famitsu is not accurate. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue has not yet been reviewed by Famitsu.

    FWIW

Famitsu also rated Halo3 and Assassin's Creed 37/40
    hmmmmm.......

    -----------------------------------
Games that received a near-perfect score of 39 include:
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991, Nintendo, for Super Famicom)
Virtua Fighter 2 (1995, Sega, for Sega Saturn)
Ridge Racer Revolution (1995, Namco, for PlayStation)
Super Mario 64 (1996, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)
Tekken 3 (1998, Namco, for PlayStation)
Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram (1999, Sega, for Dreamcast)
Final Fantasy X (2001, Square Co., Ltd., for PlayStation 2)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (2001, Sony Computer Entertainment, for PlayStation 2)
Resident Evil (2002, Capcom, for Nintendo GameCube)
Dragon Quest VIII (2004, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)
Gran Turismo 4 (2004, Sony Computer Entertainment, for PlayStation 2)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (2005, Konami, for PlayStation 2)
Dead or Alive 4 (2005, Tecmo, for Xbox 360)
Kingdom Hearts II (2006, Square Enix/Buena Vista Games, for PlayStation 2)
Ōkami (2006, Capcom, for PlayStation 2)
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (2007, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)

a handful of those game do NOT deserve 39/40

Only six games so far have received perfect scores in the Famitsu Magazine. They are listed in chronological order:
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)
    Soulcalibur (1999, Namco, for Dreamcast)
Vagrant Story (2000, Square Co., Ltd., for PlayStation)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003, Nintendo for Nintendo GameCube)
Nintendogs (2005, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)
Final Fantasy XII (2006, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)

only one of these games deserve a perfect rating

the fact that this magazine so freely hands out Perfect and Near Perfect scores to games lends me to question their validity

It's opinion, they can do whatever they want.

Many review sites give perfect 10 out of 10s.

many sites depend on sponsorship revenue

an editor was recently fired for his review of Kane and Lynch due to backlash from the publisher ... a sign that some review sites are under pressure to publish favorable ratings

I've never played a game that I didn't have at least one complaint on. I've been waiting for that perfect game, hasn't come for me, but there's been close.

Playing COD 4 now....looks like it's going to deserve a very high score

    Yo Bo
did you ever get around to playing Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time ?
i'm not saying that it's perfect or even the best game I've ever played, but there are many people that think so
even if it is almost 10 years old, it's easily worth a play if you've never played it

Nah didn't get to that one. I did play a bit of the latest Zelda, but it didn't keep my interest as much as I'd hoped it would.

    wha wha what ?!?!
i thought Twilight Princess was great (played the Cube version)
it is who we thought it was

meaning it's a Zelda game through and through
it's a tad slow to get going, but that's just for the noobs
once it gets going, it's engaging

    what about Eternal Darkness ?
