Nice post. The one thing I find it necessary to point out is that since Vince was injured and could not run as much last year, he had to throw the ball in situations he would usually just tuck it away. Later, as he regained mobility, he started to improve and was a better QB. Also, it didn't help that our offense had as much creativity as a porno last year. We did not spread out the defense much, and we constantly ran the ball with LenDale up the middle. After a while, a 5 year old could predict our offense. I think Dinger will really help VY this year, and he should get his passer ratings up to 80 or 85.

there is no building an NFL team around Garrard
despite probably being at his peak, he's also on the back 9

He doesn't have a lot of wear and tear on him. Maybe it's just me being blind, but I think last year was a fluke. No way he does that again with those WRs, especially when Taylor goes down.

All Vince did WAS throw picks. You'd rather build an NFL team around that? Again, I understand Vince has no weapons..but who does Garrard have? Even THEY went out and got receivers this off-season.

Let's put together a list of 2nd year QB's who outperformed Vince last year.

    1) Jay Cutler
Now for a list of 2nd year QB's with more career TD's than VY:

    1)
Wow....short list.

Tell ya what....Let's go back three years. Surely the extra year will turn up some names.

    1) Derek Anderson
How about a list of 2nd year guys who have a higher winning percentage?

    1)
There's no question that Vince has had his ups and downs, and struggled mightily at times. However, it's also true that there were times where he played quite well, only to have his teammates fail him...but on the stat sheet, it looks like Vince was the one who struggled.

At worst, Vince's performance has been about what you'd expect from a second-year QB, and actually better than most other 2nd year QB's. In the last 20-30 years, we've seen dozens of great QB's come and go.....but you can count on your fingers the guys who played at a consistently high level in their second season.

But apparently Vince is held to a higher standard, regardless of the weapons around him or the often-questionable offensive scheme he was asked to execute.

You're making it sound like garrard put up gaudy numbers last year. He had a great year managing games and not turning the ball over but don't make it sound like he was in the mvp race. And I'd rather build a team around a guy with amazing upside in comparison to a qb who doesn't throw picks. As for the rookie contracts, how many good organizations have stayed in the cellar? The draft can not help out bad organizations no matter what the circumstances. Detroit kept drafting receiver after receiver and paying them a lot. They deserve to be bad.

The term amazing upside sugests there is significant room for improvement.

Garrard does a lot more than not throwing picks. He had 18 TD passes twice what vince had. That's the comparison here vince vs garrard not garrard vs manning or brady.

The titans and jags were very similar last year. Running teams that don't throw a lot and don't have great WRs. Who was better in that system the guy with 20 turnovers or the guy with 5? They both threw for 2500 yards.

Nine your comparisons don't mean that much now. We are talking about a very small sample of players who were drafted in 2006 and have actually played a significant number of games.

4 guys drafted in 06 have played a season worth of games or close to it. Out of those 4 vince is #2. Ok if that makes you happy.

Tavaris jackson had a comparable season to vince last year.

The issue for me is that vince did not improve from season 1 to 2 so we can't automatically assume he will keep improving though we have to think that way because he is so important to the team.

Nobody's suggesting that Vince played as well as Garrard last year....clearly he didn't. Garrard was a stud, and probably deserved to go to the Pro Bowl; Vince struggled.

However, it was also the first really strong season of Garrard's six-year career. Remember, after he struggled with inconsistency and turnovers in 2006, an awful lot of Jags fans wanted him cut. Twelve months later, the guy walks on water.

Vince is perfectly capable of doing the same thing...but it takes time.

    Another point worth mentioning:

Do you think it's sheer coincidence that the Jags' passing game was suddenly resurrected the same year that they brought in OC Dirk Koetter?
