I'm used to getting no reaction to many of my post such as these, whether it's music or movies, my tastes don't seem to jibe with what's popular here. It's not as though Kurasowa is obscure or inaccessible. He was widely panned in his native Japan because his films were too western in style. It's funny how Kurasawa who was influenced greatly by the legendary westerns of John Ford and John Huston would in turn influence a new generation of filmmakers enough to translate his Samurai epics into Westerns. I love Leone's stuff, but have to say AK's originals are still my preference by a wide margin. My fave Leone flicks are his originals "Good, Bad and The Ugly", "Once Upon a Time In America" and "Once Upon a Time in The West".

I think too many movie watchers unfamiliar with Kurasowa's work avoid it because of it's lofty status amongst hi-brow cineastes (fearing it's boring artsy tripe). The reality is that AK's films are entertaining, accessible and unless you're completely put-off by subtitles should be seen at all costs.
