So again, you are more concerned with Bud's bottom line than doing what's in the best financial interest of the Tennessee Titans, which is to sign CJ now.

What argument do you have that signing CJ is a bad financial decision for the Titans? You get him for longer and get a large portion of his payout off the books. If he plays well, it's a win. If he busts completely from here, it affects Bud's pockets but not the team's ability to sign players in the future.

That whole post is irrelevant. It doesn't matter if CJ is frugal or if he's spending above his means.

He just had what was probably the best year of his career. He's proven over 2 seasons he's a dynamic NFL player. Fight to get paid now, or risk getting injured and never getting another NFL payday.

He would be CRAZY not to try and get paid now, particularly if there is work stoppage next season. He's got to get money now. He's already earned it. That's how paydays work in the NFL.

You said you hope CJ is a Titan for life. You think playing hardball with him now is going to make it any easier to re-sign him for future contracts?

How do you disassociate Bud's bottom line from the Titans'? They are one and the same. Some of you (not just you) have seemed to take the position that CJ deserves a big contract so he NEEDS a big contract, and you don't care how it affects the team in the long run. Giving CJ a huge contract after two seasons because he is complaining is as about as short-sighted as it gets, and it has a large potential for a bad financial decision.

Get him off the books? What books? You mean the salary cap, which we don't have anymore and may never have again. You disregard the fact that any owner is wisely only going to pay so much for a roster. Signing him to a huge contract will absolutely restrict the Titans from signing other players whether he busts or not. It will also set a harmful precedent with holdouts becoming more common.

Trying to separate Bud Adams, the owner of the Titans from the Titans is likely a poor attempt to villainize Bud. CJ is looked at as the good guy, so we need a bad guy to point at. It's not the Titans that are going to pay CJ, it's just Bud, right? He solely takes on all the risk, not the team, right? If this turns sour, it only hurts Bud's pockets, and the Titans will have plenty of money to sign other players even though Bud still signs all the checks, right? How could that be right?

I agree with most of what you're saying here, but the problem is that CJ completely disregards it. He said, "I just can't play for $550,000". If he gets his huge contract, most of it will be a signing bonus, and if he has two more great seasons after, we might just hear him say, "I just can't play for $4 million". That signing bonus is part of his contract, but he acts like he is just playing for next to the minimum. If you can't accept that his signing bonus folds into his salary, there really isn't much point in discussing a contract with you that is going to be dominated by signing bonus. I'm not saying his current signing bonus elevates to where he should be, but it isn't $550,000. He's not being paid less than Alvin Pearman, yet another fallacy.

When have the Titans EVER paid a signing bonus like CJ is asking for given the current situation? I can't think of any.

CJ is not unreasonable to hold out to try to get them to, but they are not going to do it. In the past, the organization has used excuses such as future salary cap effects. That one has been debunked in this uncapped year. A front loaded contract will effect that year's profit margin but I believe a billion dollar organization can absorb a 30 million dollar hit to cash flow for one year. (And who really knows what the Titans cash flow is?) And let's put to rest the Skins' AH analogies. CJ has never taken plays off, showed up unprepared, been a conduct problem or laid on the ground to be taken out of the game for a breather.

This situation should have been resolved by now.

Once again it would be beneficial to the team IN THE LONG RUN to sign CJ now. Free's up cap space for future seasons while CJ is on the roster.

Don't confuse the value of the team with cash flow. It's misleading to think Bud could put up a "for sale" sign and have someone hand him a check for 1 billion.

Again, it's not about the character of the player. It's about giving this much guaranteed money to ANY player based on two seasons. I can't find ANY team in the history of the NFL who extended a player after only their second season.

Even Randy Moss didn't get a new deal after three Pro Bowl seasons.

Question: Are you proposing the Titans give CJ $30mil and not extend his contract?

Most, if not all, NFL teams can not easily perform a $30 million payment at any given moment. The cash flow of teams is way, way tighter than that. Something like that needs to be planned for, assets need to be moved around, etc.

It's very possible that the Titans simply can't pay out that kind of bonus at this time. I'm not saying it's probable, but you can't discount the possibility.

Almost every NFL franchise is estimated to be worth $1B, but that price is based on so much.. I'd be shocked to see a team other than the Cowboys go for anything close to a billion dollars if put up for sale today.
