American Made, 84 miles to a gallon, seating for two.
I wouldn't drive anything that tiny. At least not as long as half the vehicles around me are rednecks in jacked up trucks. I wouldn't have a SmartCar for the same reason. Just seems like it would be game over in you were in a serious accident.
Those SmartCars are tougher than you think:
Looks like a car version of the Cam-Am Spyder
True, but for only $6800 why not...I have two bicycles that cost me that much. LOL
Cars like this can be good commuters. Those that drive alone to work over some distance. Save you some money in the long run. My biggest concern would be reliability. This Elio is brand new. Smart by comparison is made by Daimler Benz and has been around a while now. There is a proven track record with them. Hard to say how the Elio will hold up. Though, as you point out, the price is very inviting.
Rather buy a motorcycle.
"Looks like a death trap."
People who say that always say **** like "what if I get hit a big truck?"
Well if you get hit by a big truck your Honda Accord isn't going to save you either.
Remember back in the 80's the Yugo, price new was like $3900 or something like that. I have a friend that was making great money and pretty much just for fun bought two of them new. He figured that for that money he would just drive them till they died. First one lasted about a year, second one about two years. LOL
Aren't many $6800 motorcycles are there?
My uncle works with a guy who has a Chevy Volt. It is not cheap but the guy has a moderate commute to work and only fills the tank about once a month:
