or do they take the next best available player?

Lets say the Lions do not select Stafford, would the Rams knowing they need a WR pick Stafford?

or would KC needing a DE pass on one to get Michael Crabtree if he was still there?

Whats your thoughts, sometimes it just seems Teams pick whats Hot from the Combine rather they really need them or not.

Depends on the team and their needs and whether they're rebuilding etc..
If The Lions don't take Stafford he could drop significantly.

I think they often draft the best player available first, and then strategically pick up what they need (if they didn't already).

The better run teams pick BPA. The Lions will pick Stafford, regardless of whether or not they think he is a franchise QB, simply because they need a QB. This is why the Lions always pick in the first ten.

Depends how good the BPA is. Lions taking Calvin Johnson was a good idea even if they passed on Joe Thomas. Raiders taking Darren McFadden wasn't a good idea because even though he was a good player he didn't fill a need and Glenn Dorsey would have been a better selection.

If your picking at 30 like we are BPA is a good way to go.

It does depend a lot on how big the need is... almost every team has one position that is an urgent need. They assign numeric ratings to the players in the draft so if the BPA isn't their need player, but the need player's point value is significantly lower they are sometimes forced to reach.

That's the hope for our draft this year - other than maybe CB there isn't a glaring hole, so the Titans can do what the Colts have done in recent years... just pick solid players that will make your team better.

Rams would be stupid not to draft stafford if given the chance. They are a rebuilding team and bulger is coming off 2 bad years. A franchise QB is always need #1 for any team that doesn't have one.

Rams are not that desperate for a Wr either and used a 2nd and a 4th last year at that position.

Their OL is so bad though I'd assume they give Bulger 1 more year.

Consistently good teams target the players that they really want instead of the positions that they have to fill. That seems to work out mostly because even mediocre players (like Thornton or Harper perhaps) look like all stars when they fit your system and play beside great players. Do we think that Harper would be even an adequate fill in if he wasn't playing with Hope and Griffin, for example? What happens if we had taken a WR to fill our position of greater need and passed on Griffin. Is our defense still in the top 5 last year? What if we passed on Chris Johnson because we already had LenDale? We probably don't even make the playoffs.

Is there anyone in the draft the Titans would be willing to trade for? Or will we just settle with our 30th pick? I think we will target someone who isnt expected to go in the 1st round. And like CJ everyone is going to be wondering why we did that.
