History might be about to repeat itself...

Tape wars - Beta vs VHS
Disc wars - Bluray vs HDD
    Cable vs Streaming

Now... looks like we're headed to streaming vs streaming.

Netflix and Hulu are middle men. The content providers are realizing they can stream their own content. So...

Are we going to be witnessing a variation on an old war? Streaming vs Cable?

I know BR beat out HDD, but both are still equally as available. When tapes lost to DVD, I think tapes were gone within about 2 years.

There is a company that does ala carte channels (Sling?) so I'm curious if that also stands a chance against the different streaming options.

I really don't like how they all keep branching off to keep certain shows proprietary. For those of us that may only watch like 3-4 shows, you may have to stream 3-4 services which is BS.

One of the cable providers up here, Cincinnati Bell Fioptic TV, started offering ala carte.

I truly feel cable companies will either reorganize to compete OR be replaced by companies that figure it out.

I don't really count pirating, though... like that koti? Kodi?

I think Kodi and similar things will always exist but I bet some of the companies that make the shows will look into ways to prevent it more and more just like the music industry.

Just as an FYI, I recently canceled Hulu and when I went to cancel they offered me a free month to stick around. There may be some type of threshold where you have to have been a member for X amount of time before getting that offer but IDK. It's worth a shot if you hulu subscribers want to try to get a free month.
