Here's the thing: backup QB is its own position in this league, unlike any other 2nd string spot.

Any other position it's easy. The guy who isn't quite as good as the first guy, but not good enough to be the first guy, is the second guy.

I believe GMs and coaches have been burned so often by QB controversy, they DO NOT want someone who is going to compete to start in that role(unless it is a legit QB competition, which is becoming more rare). Help the starter prepare. Be adequate enough to help the 2nd team practice. Be professional enough to step in and perform if the starter goes down. But more importantly than anything, DO NOT aim for that starting role, and don't be good enough to where anyone even talks about you starting.

You've got some guys in weird roles like Cutler, Kaepernick, RG3, where they aren't really good enough to start, but the perception of their ability is good enough where you have a QB controversy Everytime the starter throws an INT. They don't fit the bill for the "backup QB position".

That's just how I see it anyway.

Getting Fisher back as HC makes about as much sense as getting Cutler as backup QB, that was my point.

No way JRob brings Cutler in to replace Cassel. The culture he is building would be destroyed very quickly

That makes no sense to me but okay. Cassel is awful.

And truthfully, Cassel checks off a lot of these boxes.

Fitzpatrick was like that in Cincy... Palmer was struggling and people were clamoring for a change when Fitzpatrick was in. Sad.

    I didn't expect it too

Cassel is more valuable to this team than Cutler. If Cutler was worth anything he wouldn't be broadcasting

With Cutler I don't believe he is good enough to start

It's his ego where he can't sign for back up money. He just couldn't be humble himself sign a one year deal to prove his self...

Look how he forced his self out of Denver. All because they mentioned him in a trade deal. He caught wind and forced a trade.

He just thinks he is better than he really is.

Honestly the bears was foolish not to bring in someone sooner to compete or at least draft someone to learn ropes of nfl.

I'm dreading the day I watch a half time show and Cutler is on TV telling kids what to do in a situation as an NFL QB..

Cutler had a great arm, but a terrible attitude and turned the damn ball over too much. Bears gave that guy waaaaaay too much time

Not necessarily true. Cutler started for how long? He wasn't great but he is better than Matt cassel. I'm not even sure Cassel is the best back up on the team.
