The Lakers were a pretty talented team, and Phil still couldn't get them to winning even with that talent until Pau Gasol fell in to our lap. That right there said a lot about his 'coaching'.

Yeah, but it's hard to win championships without a real legit big man, and Bynum (God bless him), really isn't that. Gasol is the reason they won a championship this year, as I'd put him a top 3 "3" player.

And while I wouldn't put Jackson as one of the best coaches of all-time, he might be the best superstar manager in all of sports. Period. And while some of you may roll your eyes at that, this is a pretty vital trait in a league full of grossly competitive and sometimes selfish personalities.

I will always hate the lakers. Always! The cowboys of the NBA. Worse actually.

Why are people not giving phil jackson any credit? 10 NBA titles not enough to prove he is a great coach?

What did red aurbach do that jackson hasn't done?

Nothing. They both sat and watched the best roster in the NBA do what it's supposed to do.

Would you praise a coach of a varsity team for always beating Jr. varsity? It's the same thing.
The only times he coached a team with DECENT talent, the team only did decent. He never made an average team good or a good team great. He took great teams and had great results. Or average teams and had average results.

Hmm... 10 titles in 16 years of coaching or Gloat's whiney criticism? I'll take "two handfuls of rings" for the win.

It's just that simple, isn't it? Just as only the best at their position in the NFL make the probowl. right?

pro bowls are won by votes, no matter how deserving or undeserving the player may be. championships are won based entirely on performance(with some luck thrown in too)

I guess if other NBA teams had dropped out of the playoffs because they were tired or had nagging injuries or just didn't want to play because it is a long trip and feel like the games are meaningless, then yes, your analogy would work.

I'm not sure how else to judge the greatness of an NBA coach other than winning percentage and championships won. Maybe you have better criteria? Please let us know how to properly judge a successful NBA head coach.

Maybe by winning games/championships with OVERACHIEVING teams rather than teams that simply play to their potential?

No one should get praise for winning rings with the most talented team in the NBA. Anyone could do what Phil does.

"Alright guys. Let's stay focused. Ok. They're going to the foul line a lot, but they average only 20 per game. There's no reason to foul them. Ok. Everyone keep your heads up- we'll be ok. I'm going to whistle loudly if you guys play bad."

Phil would have never won rings with the Spurs teams, or Pistons teams that Brown and Popavich won with. That's for sure.

That's not the point. The point is, just because something is labeled a certain way- doesn't always mean it deserved that label.
